Jourdan Lewis Made "Amazing Improvements"
“It went amazing, the improvements I have made," Lewis said. "I am stronger and aggressive. Last year I wasn’t comfortable. I wasn’t getting into my game. Now, as I said, I'm feeling stronger and I am comfortable in my technique in terms of what I am doing out on the field."
During his high school days Lewis was always a quiet and laid back, but confident kid. There is nothing quiet about him now. The confidence is oozing out of him. It appears he has had some help getting that swagger back..
“I think it was my talks with Coach (Thomas) Wilcher," he said. "I feel like what I did in high school I can do in college. That is all it was just being comfortable with myself. Also my mom has kept me very humble, making sure that I stay that way -- always pushing me to stay humble and work hard. That is one of the reasons I think everyone loves me out here... because I am a humble guy who loves to play football."
This summer during workouts Lewis noticed he he wasn't the only Wolverine showing improvement. There are a few players that he feels are poised to have breakout seasons.
“The big thing this spring was to look at film to see what we were doing wrong and what we were doing right," he said. "As we watched film we just got it. Things just started clicking for us. As far as the other guys in the DB unit. Delano Hill was doing really well but he has a broken jaw. Dymonte Thomas at safety is going to be good. Jarrod Wilson is a field general -- he is a silent leader who shows by example; every workout, every run, he came out and did his thing out there. Terry Richardson is coming along, and Channing Stribling. All of us are playing physical. As a team it feels like a family. [The goal is] to play comfortable and play like ball hawks."
A recurring theme during the offseason was the increased chemistry on the team. According to Lewis each player made a conscious effort to improve it.
“The coaches stressed camaraderie every week we met, and now we are a family and not just a team," he said. "We stressed 'be a family'... 'be a family' -- and that is just what we did. We have been meeting up at a position coach's house and hanging out -- playing basketball, hanging out with each other. Little things like that count."
With the season less than a month away Lewis believes all of the effort he and his teammates put in will show up the minute they step onto the football field. There is one new trait he says will be hard to miss.
“Just the aggressiveness,"Lewis stated. "Just be aggressive and play hard. Just to be playmakers -- that is what we want to be known as, playmakers. Go out there and give it your all every game and don’t take no for an answer. That’s what we want to go out there and do this season."
