Ryan Kelly Takes In Michigan
Posted Mar 18, 2010
Scout.com’s no. 1 rated center recently took in Michigan’s annual Night of Champions and came away impressed by his first trip to Ann Arbor. GoBlueWolverine caught up with the Lakota West (OH) product to get the latest.
, Scout.com’s no. 1 rated offensive center, had never been to Michigan before their annual Night of Champions event. With all of that being said, Kelly seemed very pleased with the fact that he decided to attend and learned more about the university and being a Wolverine.
“I hadn’t really been getting recruited by Michigan until they started sending me stuff in the mail,” Kelly told GoBlueWolverine. “And then I saw there was a Night of Champions on the 13th, and I had never really been up to Michigan before, but I had heard about it and how big the stadium was. It’s always been a solid program, so we figured why not. We went up there and walked in to the center with all the coaches and they all seem like really good guys and Coach Rodriguez was a real good guy.”
“We then went to the academic center, which was really nice, and they told us what we needed to get into Michigan academic wise. I didn’t know prior to how big the academics were there. Then we went to the athletic center and talked to the strength and conditioning coach, and he was a very busy guy but he seemed like he knew a lot about conditioning. Then we went back and ate dinner, watched the highlight film, and saw the Night of Champions which was great.”
After such an eventful day, Kelly definitely had a few shining moments on his trip to see the Maize and Blue.
“I would say probably the weight room and talking with the coaches. You’ve got to feel comfortable with the place and also the university. It seemed like a really great college town, and you’re a Michigan fan if you lived around there. The coaches seemed like really great people and the stadium and weight room are really state of the art. That was pretty sweet.”
While the Buckeye State prospect only holds three FBS offers currently, Cincinnati, Indiana and Louisville, the Wolverines may not be far off from extending an offer to Kelly. All that’s left is there evaluation period.
“This was the first I had heard from them, but the o-line coach I know was loading my film on Friday into their system and I gave them my game film, and the o-line coach, Coach Frey, talked to me and said just by the ScoutingOhio video they saw, he liked how I moved and the way I got onto blocks and things like that. I talked to him after the Night of Champions and he told me they’d watch my film this week and get back to me.”
While the Wolverines certainly made an impression on Kelly, even if they offer, his recruitment is likely to be a marathon rather than a sprint.
“I mean, honestly, it’s a once in a life-time opportunity, so I’m just letting all the offers come in and I’m only a junior so I don’t have to make my decision until next year. I don’t want to commit to anywhere yet and get a feel for everything. If Michigan were to offer, they would definitely be one of my tops, but right now it’s all just open right now.”
