Signing Day Capsule: D.J. Williamson
Wide Receiver 6-2/175/4.45
Warren G. Harding HS (Warren, OH)
NR: ** - Position Rank: 150
His Recruiting Story
When any Michigan fan hears the name Warren Harding associated with a top notch prospect; it's hard to not get overly excited. In fact, nine other players from that school have donned the maize and blue, including premiere recruits Prescott Burgess, receiver Mario Manningham, and a well-known Heisman Trophy Award winner named Desmond Howard. This year Michigan plucked another one from Warren Harding in its fifth commitment. This former tailback has football skills and track speed. Though he was not thrown to often he still totaled 30 catches for 365 yards, and three touchdowns, plus was named to the Jerry Rice top receivers list, a prestigious group including Ricardo Miller and the nations' No. 1 receiver Chris Dunkley. As such, this blazing receiver's speed caught the attention of many of the Big Ten schools (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin, OSU) and was receiving attention from other DI schools from West Virginia to UCLA. However, having received his Michigan offer early he jumped without hesitation.
His Commitment Comments
"It came down to just always being a Michigan fan," he added. "That's what I always wanted to do… follow my dreams… follow my heart." "I'm playing receiver (for Michigan)," he said. "(Rodriguez) really didn't say anything (about playing another position). He said they look to play nine or ten freshmen, so that made me feel real good." "I liked the way that they compete and they were all together."
Williamson is undoubtedly one of the fastest players in the state of Ohio. He has been clocked in the 4.4-second range, and ran a 10.82 in the 100 meters on the track. He's a slasher on the field and is very effective after the catch in bubble screens, however, with his gliding footwork and burning speed can be used vertically too. He has great hands, is a good route runner. He shows outstanding vision and a real explosion once he gets the ball in his hands. He is still growing into a natural receiver, but should really benefit from having a solid quarterback to receive passes from. DJ also played some cornerback, and showed good ability to break on the football.
