The Michigan basketball team improved to 6-5 on the season with a 76-46 win over Coppin State on Tues. night at Crisler Arena. Stu Douglass and DeShawn Sims led the Wolverines with 20 and 18 points.
ANN ARBOR -
Stu Douglass finished with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from behind the three-point arc, and DeShawn Sims chipped in with 18 as the Wolverines got to 6-5 on the season with a 76-46 win over Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor.
Manny Harris finished with just five points for the Wolverines, but the junior guard finished with seven assists as his teammates helped U-M carry a double-digit lead throughout much of the contest. Stu Douglass' triple with 13:27 to go in the first half stretched
Michigan
's lead to 18-7, plus keyed a 21-5 run over a seven minute stretch to give Michigan a 30-12 edge.
Douglass scored 11 of the 20 Wolverines points, and DeShawn Sims added six of his 18. Zack Novak and
Laval Lucas-Perry
also scored during the run.
Over the final minutes of the half the Wolverines built the lead to 23 points.
After a Harris free throw with 7:08 to play in the half, Lucas-Perry pushed the lead to 20 points at 34-14 with a triple. Novak then matched a Sam Coleman jumper. Douglass added one more three-ball before the half, and Lucas-Perry added a layup in the final minute to post Michigan a 41-18 lead.
The second half opened with DeShawn Sims scoring the first six Michigan points. A pair of free throws sandwiched between a dunk and an inside layup matched three straight Coppin State baskets. Minutes later, at the 14:18 mark, Michigan pushed its lead to 25 points on a Zack Novak triple.
Coppin State moved within 21 minutes later, but that was as close as it would get. Manny Harris scored his lone points of the half to match a pair of George Jackson free throws. Then, with eight minutes left, Douglass hit two more three-pointers to make it 62-35.
The teams then traded buckets until
Darius Morris
concluded the scoring with a layup providing the 76-46 margin of victory.
With the non-conference schedule now in the books, the Wolverines open the Big 10 portion of the schedule with a noon tip-off against the
Indiana
Hoosiers at Crisler Arena on New Years Eve.
