The Wolverines men's basketball team travels to Lawrence Kansas to take on the Jayhawks Saturday ... Deshawn Sims talks about the game and wha a win would mean for U-M.
Question: What do you know about Kansas; how much have you seen them this year?
DeShawn Sims: “I haven't seen much of them this year. I know they’re the number one team in the country. There a pretty good team from what I’ve seen.”
Question: Is it kind of like the UCONN trip from last year? It presents an opportunity for you guys to make some noise against a good team?
DeShawn Sims: “Definitely. I don’t think it is no different than the UCONN trip. We had some pretty big wins before and up until that point, but Kansas being number one is a good opportunity for us.”
Question: Is there a difference whether a team is number one rather than this being a big name opponent?
DeShawn Sims: “It’s a difference because the number one team in the country is the best that it gets, so we definitely going in with the mindset that we have to play our best to even compete.”
Question: Do you know any of the guys from summer stuff or anything?
DeShawn Sims: “Yeah I’ve been knowing
since probably 8th grade.”
Question: During AAU?
DeShawn Sims: “Yeah Chicago-Detroit team. Just playing against him and played with him a few times. I played against big Cole (Aldrich) this summer at a couple of the camps. I’m familiar with some of the guys.”
Question: How did you do against him (Cole); did you hold your own?
DeShawn Sims: “He was actually on my team, so we did a lot of winning this summer together.”
Question: Can you talk about not having a marquee win yet like you had last year; is it imperative do you think at this point that you get one of those?
DeShawn Sims: “We definitely need it. It is not going to be too many more opportunities beside the tough teams in the Big Ten. So we definitely need a win just for our sake, not even for a resume or anything like that.”
Question: What would a win for you Saturday mean to you guys?
DeShawn Sims: “It would just solidify that we made some adjustments since the early part of the season. We had to make some adjustments and it just shows how far along we have come.”
Question: Do you feel like this team is ready for Kansas?
DeShawn Sims: “Getting ready – definitely. We haven't done a lot of scouting on them yet. I can't say we 100% ready, but mentally we going to be ready to go into this game because it has been some hard practices.”
Question: Do you have any appreciation for Kansas and stuff like that?
DeShawn Sims: “Of course. Great program for many years and that’s one of the programs that you look at and people always see great success. If is definitely good to be able to go there in my career and be able to play in Lawrence.”
Question: You’ve been to Cameron and you’ve been to other places, does those things stick with you?
DeShawn Sims: “I’ve seen Kansas play on TV and I can hear the crowd through the TV so it definitely will be an experience to go play there.”
Question: On whether the team’s early ranking contributed to their struggles…
DeShawn Sims: “I don’t think it was so much the rankings. We definitely had a lot to work on. We didn’t play a lot of games and we really didn’t know what we had, so we are becoming more comfortable with what we have now and coach made some great adjustments this week and last week, so we’re just finally coming along, coming around the corner.”
Question: Coach Beilein said people have to be tougher.
DeShawn Sims: “Yeah definitely. When he came here he had to play guys and we had to throw them out there in the fire, it has not been that situation thus far because we got some guys who are a little bit more veteran and the situation has totally changed from three years ago.”
