ANN ARBOR -
The
Michigan
basketball team improved to 5-4 on the season with a come from behind win over Detroit on Sunday afternoon at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. Manny Harris netted 27 for the Wolverines, and DeShawn Sims added 23 points and 12 rebounds. Sims finished 10-of-12 from the floor and 3-for-3 from deep.
Down 36-33 at the half, a strong surge to start the second half put the Wolverines on top for good. Out of the break DeShawn Sims scored 10 of the Wolverines first 12 second half points. Stu Douglass also added an easy lay in as U-M went up 46-40.
Detroit answered to bring the score within two points minutes later. Xavier Keeling finished a successful three-point play at the free throw line to make the score 51-49.
Over the following 10 minutes the Wolverines put the game out of reach.
Zack Gibson
and Manny Harris each connected on a pair from the line to help U-M push the lead back to six. After a Chase Simon jumper ended the Michigan mini-run, Harris added a triple. Gibson then added two more free throws after seeing the lead slashed to three once again. By the 2:44 mark, the lead was extended to 11 on another Manny Harris jumper.
In the first half the teams battled back and forth before the visiting team from Detroit emerged with a three point lead. Michigan jumped on top 5-0 in the opening minutes before the Titans answered with an 11-5 run.
With 8:01 remaining the Titans built their biggest lead of the game, a six-point lead on a Donavan Foster layup. Stu Douglass and
Laval Lucas-Perry
, though, erased the deficit on the next two U-M possessions. Douglass found the bottom of the basket from long range, and Lucas-Perry added an old fashioned three-point play.
Detroit rebuilt their five-point lead before Stu Douglass closed the game with a last second jumper.
The Wolverines are now off until next Saturday when the Maize and Blue will meet No. 1-ranked Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. Tip-off is scheduled for Noon.
