Michigan Streaks Past Iowa

The Wolverine's men's basketball team put on perhaps its best seven minute streak on the season to get back on the winning track, 70-62 over Iowa in the friendly confines of Crisler Arena this (Saturday) afternoon.

The first 32 minutes of the game were close and hard fought. Michigan led 31-29 at the half, but in the second half Iowa, behind center Sean Sonderleiter (16 points), gradually pulled away to a 46-40 lead at the 13:20 mark. Suddenly 'the lights went on' for Michigan, who played perhaps it's best seven minute stretch of the season. Led by six points each by Junior forward Bernard Robinson's and freshman Daniel Horton, the Wolverines went on an18-4 tear to take a 58-50 lead with 6:23 left. And the Wolverines never looked back, extending the lead to 65-54 with 1:46 remaining before finally defeating the Hawkeyes, 70-62.

Bernard Robinson played perhaps his best game 'buzzer to buzzer' of the season to date, recording 21 points, six assists and six rebounds. Daniel Horton had another strong game with 16 points, six assists and three steals. Freshman guard Lester Abram added 14 points and nine rebounds, and senior forward LaVell Blanchard chipped in ten points and 12 rebounds.

At half time a banner was added to the Crisler Arena rafters as former Wolverine great Rudy Tomjanovich (currently Houston Rockets coach) had his jersey retired.

After losing two straight, Michigan gets back on the winning track in the Big Ten for a 7-2 league record, good for second place behind Purdue (7-1 going into this afternoon's action). Michigan is now 14-8 overall, and goes on the road for its next game at Wednesday at Indiana (4-4 in the Big Ten and 14-7 overall going into today).
