Now heading into the final year of his career as a Michigan Wolverine, Deshawn Sims sees a lot of unfinished business ahead. So while last year's run to the NCAA tournament was a memorable accomplishment, it hasn't quelled his or his team's desire to take things to the next level in 2010.

Question:  Coach said he sent you guys a long letter on still hunting; what did you take from that besides that you’re still hunting?

DeShawn Sims:  “You know its situation, it’s not the mind frame of the player.  We’ve had some success last year, so it can haunt you to have success and be able to think that you’re better than what you are, so coaches want us to keep the mindset of still being the hunter, which means that we definitely want to be hungry and don’t take anything or anybody lightly and in no given situation. That concept is definitely a perfect concept.  Even though we are not the type of guys that get big headed or have a huge egos, we definitely need to be told that to kill any indecision about our goal this year.  We definitely still are the hunters.  Even though we be hunted, we still would want to hunt people.  We don’t want people to think that we are just getting ranked and big headed; we still want to be that hungry team that got us last year.”

Question:  Is that going to be hard to do?

DeShawn Sims:  “No because of the guys that have been recruited to this University.  The guys are hard work, blue collar guys who just want to win and if that’s what it takes for us to win just for us to be level headed and not having a big ego on our shoulders about something that happened last year.”

Question:  Will it feel the same if you go back to the tournament again?

DeShawn Sims:  “The feeling will definitely be…it will be a feeling of maturity just saying that okay we’ve been here, we just don’t want to be here no more.  We want to advance.  Last year getting there was really huge, even though we wanted to advance and be advance and getting there was like the excel.”

Question:  That appearance last spring, how hungry does it make you to get back there to the NCAA tournament?

DeShawn Sims:  “Definitely that experience last year was definitely…it kind of different.  I talked to Anthony Wright about it the other day.  I don’t think we’ll have to ever feel it again because it has been so much struggle for the program, and we just did it for so many other people than ourselves and it was definitely a feeling that was great.  We definitely want to strive to get there because that’s our highest goal, definitely to get to the NCAA tournament and advance in each round.”

Question:  Beilein also talked about you and Manny (Harris) taking ownership of the team that he saw that last year, but have you two talked about that now and what it means to take over?

DeShawn Sims:  “I definitely told the guys that even yesterday, the season is so close, I see myself leading more every day just for me and Manny to be guys that are respected on this team and to also been guys who played and got sort of a veteran status is key and I think the guys with just that alone look up to us and follow us if we lead them in the right direction.”

Question:  What does it mean to both of you to have been a part of that, really the resurgence to bring Michigan basketball back?

DeShawn Sims:  “That’s what we came to do the University to do.  I know that was part of my recruitment, to be able to come to Michigan when it was a down program and be able to make a drastic change.  To be able to say that being that young and to also show some strides in doing it has been tremendous.”

Question:  How seriously did you think about jumping and leaving?

DeShawn Sims:  “I really didn’t give it a lot of thought.  I wasn’t even really thinking about it too hard.  I got some looks, I got some calls and people were talking to me.  I noticed that it was a buzz going on about it, but it was definitely there was no question about me coming back and playing another year of college.”

Question:  What do you want to do this year to showcase yourself for what comes next?

DeShawn Sims:  “Just show consistency and efficiency and show whoever that I have to show that I’m about all winning and I’ll do whatever it takes to win.”

Question:  How much will it help you if a guy like Ben can get in there and play that five and get another big guy in there for you?

DeShawn Sims:  “It’s definitely going to help, and I definitely think that Ben will be ready to give us some huge contributions this year.  It’s definitely not a thing where being so far behind or Zack Gibson or I don’t even know who is going to start.  We definitely have three big guys that are going to compete and be ready in any given situation.”
