Parkview Baptist (LA) wide receiver
Drew Dileo
committed to the University of Michigan back in April, sight, and site, unseen. Dileo finally made it up to Ann Arbor in mid-June to get a glimpse of what will soon be his stomping grounds.
“Everything was great up there – facilities, campus, the people – even better than I expected,” Dileo told
GoBlueWolvierine
. “I met with all the coaches, shook their hands, and met coach Rodriguez for the first time face-to-face. It was great.”
The 5-11 175 pound speedster has dreamt of playing for Michigan since he first saw the winged helmets on TV as a child. When he received an offer from the Wolverines, the decision was a relatively easy one.
“Whenever you talk about the University of Michigan, you think about all the history there. The championships, coaches and players.” Dileo said. “When the offer came, I just thanked God I had the opportunity to come up there.”
Dileo chose Michigan over two Bayou-state schools in Tulane and Rice. Stanford had offered as well, but Dileo opted for the Midwest -- to the surprise of some.
“Most people’s reaction is the same -- they say, ‘Man, its cold up there,’” Dileo said. “But hey, that’s what they make jackets for! If you have the opportunity to come to Michigan…yeah it may be cold, but it’s the University of Michigan!”
Dileo’s explosiveness makes him a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball. Michigan’s coaches have told him he’ll likely play the slot, return kicks and contribute on special teams.
“We’ll just have to see how it goes,” said Dileo, whose summer plans include little more than hitting the weight room. Music to coach Barwis’ ears.
“(Barwis) gave me and my parents a little taste of what it’s going to be like,” said Dileo of his recent trip to Ann Arbor. “He’s everything you could want in a strength coach. He’s working, putting his time in with the players and working to get the same out of us. He does a very good job, and he’s a great guy, I loved it. He’s a very high energy guy.”
Dileo was MVP of the Louisiana Class 3A state-title game as a sophomore at Parkview. Despite an undefeated regular season, the Eagles failed to defend their title last year.
With his college commitment out of the way, Dileo is glad to simply focus on helping his team return to prominence.
“Before I was worried about what schools I was going to visit, and what camps I was going to,” Dileo said. “Now I’m not going to any camps at all. I’m just focusing more on my senior season and working out hard.”
