Black a Top Target for Michigan

Jibreel Black

Cincinnati (OH) Wyoming defensive lineman is one of the fastest rising prospects in the Midwest. The Buckeye State standout has seen numerous coaches come through his school in recent weeks, including the University of Michigan. As a matter of fact, a member of the Wolverines staff made a special trip to Black's school last week.

Few prospects in the state of Ohio are receiving as much attention from the Michigan Wolverines as Cincinnati Wyoming defensive lineman Jibreel Black.  The talented youngster is such a priority for the Maize & Blue that the they pulled out a special resource on a recent visit.

"Coach Tall came up to the school on Tuesday and the defensive coordinator (Greg Robinson) came too," Black said.  "I really didn't see them though because I was on a field trip.  They said they want to put me at an end or a three-technique and just get in there, stop the run, rush the passer, and get after the ball."

That Robinson made the trip was particularly significant since Michigan's coordinators are seldom on the road recruiting under the new model.  His appearance speaks to where Black sits on the target list.  It also help spell out to Black's coaches exactly what the plan for the star lineman would be in Ann Arbor.  For Black, however, there isn't much significance being placed on where he plays.  He cares more about the opportunity to play at all.

"I think three-technique and defensive end are pretty similar so it don't really matter," he replied when asked which position he preferred to play.  "When you watch me you're going to say he is an explosive defensive end coming off the ball beating the offensive tackle with his first step.  He is very explosive and he has good hands. He kills the offensive lineman's hands so much that he doesn't want to put them up no more (laughing).  His rip move is impeccable, his speed to the outside is crazy… he is a maniac on the field!  I just want a chance to show it."

Black did just that on the field last year, racking up 73 tackles, seven sacks, two forced fumbles, and a touchdown.  He is now up to 23 offers and the interest from college coaches shows no signs of slowing down.  With his tentative timeframe for making a decision fast approaching, it's important for many of those suitors to get him on campus for visits in the near future.  Michigan will have its shot this weekend.

"Most likely I'm going to try to (make a decision this summer), but I don't know for sure, "Black reported.  "It's going to be kind of hard to make a decision without taking officials.  I'm going to try to take a lot of visits this summer.  I've already been up to Michigan State, Indiana, Kentucky and Cincinnati.  I haven't been to Michigan before, but I'll be up there May 30th for the barbecue.  It's going to be me, my parents, and my little brother."

Speaking of brothers, it's well known that Black's older brother Larry Black was a freshman for the Hoosiers last year.  That said, he has been very consistent in describing over the past few months about how much of a role that will play in his decision.

"It's really not going to be that much of a factor," Black said regarding his brother's presence in Bloomington.  "I'm going to make my own decision based on where I want to go and where I feel like I'm going to fit in.  I'm looking for (close) distance, academics, and which way the football program is going."

GoBlueWolverine will have more on Black in the coming days.
