Pahokee, Fla. standout Vincent Smith updates GBW on his season, his commitment to Michigan, and when he’ll make the trek to Ann Arbor for his official visit.
In the past year a pipeline has opened wide from the Muck City area high school (Pahokee) up north to Ann Arbor. Current Wolverine slot receiver
Martavious Odoms
started that trend when he announced for Michigan just past signing day in 2008. On August 30th, 2008 that pipeline opened even wider when current Blue Devils
Vincent Smith
and
Brandin Hawthorne
announced their choices for Michigan.
Smith told GBW: “My season is going real good. We lost on ESPN a few weeks ago, but that was after Norman (Griffith) passed away, and our emotions played a huge part of that. We are on track to get to the playoffs."
And Smith's season has taken off as well: "Last game I rushed for 180 some yards and three touchdowns in the first half," he told GBW, "and I didn’t play the second half.”
While Pahokee’s season is going just as planned, the Wolverines struggles have raised questions whether the current commits of the 2009 class may venture away from their original verbal. With Smith, that is not the case.
“I’ve been paying attention to the season. But my commitment is still solid and so is Brandin’s.”
The opportunity for early playing time and seeing so many freshmen including his former teammate on the field already has opened the running back’s eyes.
“I see me coming in and being able to help in a big way as a freshman,” stated Smith.
While his commitment is still firm, Smith has still yet to see Ann Arbor with his own eyes. That day is coming sooner than later, and a current teammate may just be with him.
“I’ve been so busy I haven’t been able to talk to Martavious. I will talk with him when I come up there on the 25th for the Michigan State game. And I’m going to ask Nu'keese Richardson if he’s coming with me, cause he’s still been saying something about visits.”
Vincent Smith is one in 2009 that the Maize and Blue won’t have to worry about.
