Certain high school prospects become well known to recruiting fans -- namely the consensus 'top 50' kids, plus those who get U-M scholarship offers in the spring-summer. But there is a whole other catagory of top recruit -- those who have great senior seasons and, based on thir senior film, get later-fall offers. The trick with these kids for U-M fans is identifying the REAL recruits, those with REAL offers. Fortunately this is the forte of GoBlueWolverine! In the past few days we brought to your attention RB Tyrone Moss from Florida, who will make U-M his 5th visit in January if he doesn't commit to NCAR or MIA first.

Now here is another: linebacker Fred Sparkman from Tennessee. You may not have heard much about him, but he is a top 100 prospect who is visiting U-M in December -- and he now has a U-M offer as well!

Yours truly woke up All-American linebacker Fred Sparkman (6-2, 220 lbs., 4.6 in the 40) from Columbia, Tenn., Central (his mom said I could -- she was happy to hear from me!).

Fred, we've known you have a Michigan visit scheduled. But we did not know whether you had a Michigan scholarship offer.

"Yes sir. I got an offer from Michigan in a letter in the mail recently."

What is it that attracts you about Michigan?

"The atmosphere there, and all the great players they've sent to NFL."

Have you ever been to Michigan?

"Yeah. I have relatives in Flint, and we've visited them there."

Where else are you going to visit?

"I'm going to North Carolina on December 6, and to South Carolina January 17th. I'll also visit Arkansas, but I don't have a date. They have all offered me a scholarship, as has Alabama. I don't know about a fifth visit yet.

Do you have a favorite now?

"No."

How did your season go?

"We lost in the second round of the playoffs, we finished 8-4. I don't care about stats, so I can't tell you how many tackles I had. But I wasn't home last night because I had a basketball game -- I play power forward."

As far as ratings go, Sparkman has caught the eye of Tom Lemming (Prep Football Report), who has ranked him the #78 prospect nationally in his November Newsletter.

Note: in the last summer, when Sparkman was hoping for a Michigan offer, he was saying the Wolverines were his early favorite. Then when North Carolina jumped in and offered him, they became his early fall favorite. And his dad reportedly likes Arkansas. So this should be an interesting recruiting race.
