Floyd Now at Ease with Michigan

J.T. Floyd

The Michigan Wolverines had vaulted to the top of Greenville SC CB J.T. J.T. Floyd's list in recent months, but the turnover on the coaching staff brought them back down to earth. However, the new staff has now made contact with Floyd and the Maize & Blue has made another move.

For one of South Carolina’s finest football players, the anxiety he had regarding the vacant coaching post at Michigan have suddenly turned into a feeling comfort. A conversation with Michigan’s new headman was the key to the turnaround with J.T. Floyd.

“I am a little more at ease now that Michigan has finally found a new football coach,” Floyd said. “Coach Rodriguez said he watched film of me and asked me what side of the ball I wanted to play on.”

Floyd is considered one of the top corner prospects in the south, but Rodriguez learned last week that the 5-11, 200-pounder is a playmaker on offense as well. He was an outstanding receiver for J L Mann high school (Greenville, SC) putting up 850 yards on 50 receptions. Rodriguez let it be known that he felt the youngster was good enough to play offense in college… if he wants to.

“My heart is telling to play offense,” Floyd said. “On the other hand, my mind is telling me defense.”

A conversation with Michigan’s new cornerbacks coach shed light on which way Floyd is likely leaning at this point.

“When I talked with Coach Gibson he told me he liked my aggressiveness and playing style,” Floyd recalled. “That’s the way I am. He said that he would use that. We will play some 3-3-5 but will switch up to man to man.”

Although the Wolverines have put themselves right back into the thick of things, Floyd is still a soft commit to the Volunteers. The turning point could come when Michigan makes its in-home visit.

“Coach Rodriguez should be coming down to visit on January 5th or 6th,” Floyd said.
