Winston Makes the Grade
Practice for the fall opened up this week at Detroit Denby and no one is more ready for the fall than Glenn Winston. The senior running back is the key component in the Tars repeating as PSL-1 champs, he also is on the recruiting radar of several schools and he is anxious to prove himself worthy of an offer. A big step towards the first one came this week, when Winston received some good news. “I got all A’s in summer school,” Winston reported. “I just started studying and doing my work.” Close friend and running back coach Chris Moore knows what a big accomplishment that was for him. “Glenn’s issues came early in high school where he might not have tried as hard because he didn’t know at the time what was at stake, but the grades he got this summer will replace those classes," Moore said. “He’s good to go.” At 6’1, 213 lbs and consistently running in the 4.3s and low 4.4s, Winston has been one of the top combine performers in the Midwest this summer. He again tested well at a combine last week in Detroit where he repped 185-lbs. 27 times. Those kinds of testing numbers have him hearing from schools all over the Midwest. “We’re going down to Toledo,” Moore said. “They haven’t sent anything official yet, but they sound like they’re ready to make an offer.” Winston had previously reported that his top two teams were Michigan and Louisville, but after his recent success in the classroom and a little more thinking, the top of his list has changed. “I haven’t really heard from Louisville,” he said. “I’m really just trying to do what it takes to go to Michigan now.” Also a safety and linebacker for Denby, Winston was exclusively at running back during the Wolverines’ summer camp. One of the more pressing questions in his recruitment is would he be open to playing on the defensive side of the ball in college? “I don’t want to play defense,” Winston said frankly. “I like playing running back and that’s where I want to be."
