Detroit Southeastern has been a hotbed for recruiting activity over the past few months. With two of the most coveted prospects in the state of Michigan walking the halls, a number of college coaches have made the school one of their primary points of interest. That is certainly true for the Michigan Wolverines, who have already offered WR/ATH Fred Smith a scholarship. Their interest has also been piqued by the man in charge of delivering Smith the ball, QB/ATH Charles Burrell.
Smith made his way to Ann Arbor Tuesday for the second time in four days. On the most recent trip, however, he was accompanied by Burrell. The versatile youngster found it to be an enlightening experience.
"It was pretty good," Burrell said. The whole practice was intense. Everyone was moving real well to the ball… playing to the whistle and everything. It's a definitely a big step up from high school."
The Wolverines are recruiting Burrell as a free safety, which meant he spent much of his time observing Vance Bedford work with the defensive backs. While doing so, he gained a much better appreciation for the new coach's personality.
"I had talked to him on the phone before, but you can really see in person that he is a cool guy.," said Burrell. "His words mean a lot. I felt motivated just by his words. He likes to exaggerate a little bit and he gets you hyped up about anything."
After the practice concluded, Burrell took the opportunity to spend a little one on one time with a few members of the staff. With one offer already in tow from the Wolverines' in-state rivals, he wanted to ascertain where he stood on Michigan's list.
"Michigan State has offered me," he said. "I gave Michigan my highlight film and they said they were going to call real soon. They were like, "yeah man, we're going to pop this in and we're going to watch it over and over. Then everyone is going to agree on whether you should be a Michigan Wolverine. Basically I've just been waiting on them to call (laughing)."
At this point, Burrell is content to see how many schools decide to show interest. The youngster is in no hurry and wants to travel around the country to see what other programs have to offer. "I definitely want to take all my visits," he said. "I'm waiting on interest from any other colleges. Any other colleges I can go to, I want to go to. I will most definitely make it to Michigan and Michigan State again. I want to go to Ohio State, Iowa, and Miami as well. I really want to get down to Miami and see what they're all about. And also Notre Dame."
Though still a long way away from a decision, one program has clearly shot to the top of Burrell's list.
"Right now, based on the visits and who's showing the most interest in me, it's Michigan State," Burrell said regarding his leader. "They've shown me that they have a lot to offer. My top three schools are probably Michigan, Michigan State, and Notre Dame."
GoBlueWolverine will have more on Burrell in the coming weeks.
