Jack Johnson, Matt Hunwick and Tim Cook each walked away winners last night at the annual CCHA Awards banquet in Detroit, Mich. Johnson and Hunwick, both named to the All-CCHA team earlier this month, were named offensive and defensive defensemen of the year, respectively, while Cook earned the Humanitarian of the year award.
Despite finishing second in the CCHA regular season standings, the Wolverines were on top at the annual end of the year CCHA Awards banquet in Detroit, Mich., last night.
With a nominee in seven of the nine categories, the Wolverines walked away with three winners at last nights awards, tops of any team in the conference.
Jack Johnson
, the leading vote getter on the all-conference team released earlier this month, walked away from his second season in the CCHA as the conferences top offensive defenseman. Johnson finished first in defenseman scoring (16-18-34) in the CCHA and is currently +21 on the season.
Matt Hunwick
, the Wolverines senior captain, walked away as the conferences top defensive defenseman. Paired with Johnson on the Wolverines top defensive line, Hunwick leads all
Michigan
defenseman with a +22 rating. He also contributed 26 points from the blue line.
Senior
Tim Cook
claimed the Wolverines final award of the night. Named the winner of the Illitch Humanitarian Award, Cook is the second Wolverines in the seven year history of the award to accept the honor. The Illitch Humanitarian is given to the league's top citizen based on his contributions off the ice, as well as on, to his team, his program, his school and his community.
Other Wolverines selected as finalists for last nights awards include
T.J. Hensick
(CCHA Player of the Year), Red Berenson (CCHA Coach of the Year) and
David Rohlfs
(CCHA Defensive Forward of the Year).
The No. 9-ranked Wolverines next return to the ice against No. 11
Michigan State
at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit for the semifinals of the CCHA Tournament. FSN Detroit will have Friday nights contest.
