Crown Point, Indiana went 12-1 in 2006, losing in the state regionals. One of the key components of the Bulldog's great season was offensive lineman Kurt Wermers. The 6-5 O-lineman is being rewarded for his efforts by Big Ten scholarship offers. The latest - Michigan. GBW spoke to Wermers about it.
Offensive lineman
Kurt Wermers
has been a sleeper prospect from Northwest Indiana, even though the 6-foot-5, 260-pounder helped Crown Point to a 12-1 season in Class 5A (largest class) football in 2006.
But he'll not be an unknown for much longer.
GoBlueWolverine
called the Wermers home last Monday afternoon, and his mother answered. "Kurt is not home, he's at school lifting. I just got home, but I work at the high school -- and I know for a fact that Kurt called Michigan this noon; he came and told me right afterwards. He was pretty excited -- but he'll call you and tell you about it himself."
About an hour later, the phone rang -- it was Kurt (stay tuned for a TJBlog on "call-backs").
"Yes, I talked to Coach Carr today. And he offered me a full ride scholarship to Michigan."
So, we have to ask -- did you commit?
"No, I did not commit."
What other schools have offered you?
"I have offers from Purdue, Northwestern, Cincinati and Indiana."
We've seen you around U of M before, haven't we?
"Yes. I've been to Michigan three times before: I visited last summer; then I went to the Iowa game last fall; and I was there for their Junior Day last month."
Do you plan on getting back to Michigan some more?
"Yes. I plan to go back up to Michigan for a spring practice ... (then we asked, about camp) ... I'm not sure about the Michigan camp, but probably."
What is your timetable?
"I plan on deciding before my football season starts next fall. I want to be able to concentrate on my team ."
You've been to Junior Days at Indiana and Purdue now, as well as Michigan. Do you have a top 3-4-5?
"My top three are Michigan, Purdue and Northwestern."
You're 6-5, 260 ... do you see yourself as a tackle or a guard in college?
"I've played both, tackle by sophomore year and guard my junior year ... so one or the other, it doesn't make any difference to me."
