2007 Defensive Backs Roster, Outlook and 2008 Recruiting:
22 Jamar Adams, S, Senior, 2004 recruiting class, probable starter
30 Stevie Brown, S, Sophomore, 2006 recruiting class, probable starter
27 Brandon Harrison, N/S, Junior, 2005 recruiting class
31 Brandent Englemon, S, 5th year Senior, 2003 recruiting class
5 Charles Stewart, S/CB, Red-shirt Junior, 2004 recruiting class
Michael Williams, N/S, Freshman, 2007 recruiting class
James Rogers S/CB, Freshman, 2007 recruiting class
Artis Chambers S, Freshman, 2007 recruiting class
Zion Babb, DB/WR, Freshman, 2007 recruiting class
9 Anton Campbell, ST/S, 5th year Senior, 2003 recruiting class
There are good starters at safety for the 2007 Wolverines, but a lack of quality depth is a question this coming year.
Jamar Adams is the lock for one of the safeties spots with Stevie Brown and Brandent Englemon battling for the other spot. Charles Stewart could be a surprise with him moving from corner back to safety in the off season and look at how he does in the spring to see how he might make a push this year he might be Adams replacement next year when Adams graduates. Anton Campbell will continue to be a very good special team’s player. James Rogers, Zion Babb and Artis Chambers all will likely red-shirt this coming year.
Brandon Harrison will probably be the 'starting' nickel back again this year with Michael Williams probably is the back-up for that spot.
Another question: will new defensive backs coach Vance Bedford coach the safeties as well as the corners?
2008 Defensive Backs Recruiting:
Michigan loses Jamar Adams, Brandent Englemon and Anton Campbell at safety to graduation.
In 2008 recruiting will be very important in the defensive backs position and they need to find a couple of “elite” kids that could possible come in right away and play or the following year at both safety and corner back spot. GBW's list is just getting put together with players being added during this early recruiting class of 2008.
2008 Safeties - early possibilities:
N.C. S Robert Blanton (6-3, 190) from Charlotte Butler (Jamar Adam's school). A two-time Michigan Camper. Butler is getting TALL - pushing 6-3, now, but still has very fast feet and excellent coverage skills. He had the flu at the Army Junior Combine and was trading off between working out and vomiting, but he was still excellent. He could be either a FS or even possibly a CB in college ... and he's told GBW that his fav college is U-M. Blanton has a U-M offer, and talked to Coach Carr on Signing Day.
N.C. S Spencer Adams (6-2, 180, 4.4) from Charlotte Butler (Jamar Adam's school). He was offered by U-M on Signing Day as well as his teammate Blanton.
CN S Eli Biakabatuka (6-3, 200) from Quebec. The younger brother of former Wolverine great Tshmonga, Eli played well at the 2006 Michigan Camp.
N.J. S Will Hill (6-3, 200, 4.4) from Jersey City, NJ. A Scout.com Top 100 Junior who has a U-M offer and lists U-M in his initial Top 6.
Mich. S/CB Troy Tidwell (5-11, 190) from Detroit Southwestern. He had a good performance at the Army Junior Combine.
Mich. S/Ath. Charles Burrell (6-1, 190) from Detroit Southeastern. He had a good performance at the Army Junior Combine.
