His Recruiting Story
Toney Clemons is the cousin of Steve Breaston, and the two spent time living together as children. And Toney grew up a michigan fan as well. So when it became clear that Toney was going to be top-notch wide receiver prospect, Michigan was immediately 'right there'. Toney's problem was that his team did not throw the ball! So Toney had to make himself known on the combine circuit -- and did he ever! He was the hands-down star of the 2006 Scout.com Pitt Combine, and he followed that with a top-wideout performance at the east coast's '06 Elite Combine as well -- this time with U-M coaches in attendance. A U-M offer soon followed. Selling U-M to Toney was never TOO tough, and Michigan played it's 'ace in the hole' with Clemons by matching him up with Ryan Mallett -- both at the '06 Michigan Camp in June, where Mallett camped and Clemons came in for a day ("He threw it goal line to goal line," Clemons told us, "And threw me a couple to test whether I could catch his ball."), and at Clemon's official visit -- the MSU Game which 'just so happened' to be Mallett's official visit as well. Clemons committed soon after the MSU game, becoming Michigan's 13th commitment.

GoBlueWolverine Commentary:
You wouldn't know it from his senior stats, because his team for some reason didn't throw the ball, but Toney Clemons is the complete package as a receiver. At 6-3, 195 pounds and running a 4.45 sec. 40, Scout.com's #68 prospect will remind Michigan fans of David Terrell on the field physically. State champion in the 110m high hurdles, Clemons is tall, fast, physical, with a natural loping stride that gets easy separation from defensive backs. Toney will have to get a little stronger to be a factor on the field as a freshman, but that may well come over the spring and summer. At the Elite Combine back in the spring, scouts came to see future Army All-American WR Greg Little -- and came away raving about Clemons instead. Once the always-smiling Clemons gets a little stronger -- watch out! Ryan Mallett will have the perfect guy to go deep with!
