GBW Video Recruiting Road Trip: Vince Helmuth -

His Recruiting Story
Vince Helmuth was born to be a Wolverine. There is actually no "recruiting story" for Vince as Michigan was always his dream. The question always was -- would his dream come true? Brought up in nearby Saline, Mich., we spotted Vince at most Michigan homes games for years -- but he as a smallish, not-too-in-shape DL, and so we always wondered the Michigan dream would come true for him. But then he went to work on himself -- and did 2005-06 ever make a difference! We were shocked and impressed when we saw him at the 2006 Army Junior Combine, where he'd lost weight, looked buff -- and ran a 4.3 sec. shuttle and put up a very good 24 bench press reps. And Michigan took note of his performance as well -- offering Vince a scholarship, and getting his commitment in the February '06 Junior Day, Michigan's #1 commitment for this class. Helmuth is an early enrollee at Michigan, already in school for the winter semester.

GoBlueWolverine Commentary:
Every time we've seen Vince over the past year be was thinner and at the same time more buff. He turned himself into a fullback, and as a senior ran for 1,536 yards and 22 touchdowns this fall for the 9-3 Saline Hornets, who won two playoff games. Vince worked, and played, himself into being ranked Scout.com's #1 fullback. Vince is a great kid, from a great family, and is an extremely hard-working, low-ego guy -- the perfect mental and emotional package for a fullback. In Helmuth, U-M has found itself another Kevin Dudley-type fullback.
