His Recruiting Story
Seems like Ryan Mallett has already been at Michigan forever! But it was actually in mid-October, after his MSU-game official visit, that the big signalcaller decided to enroll at U-M this January. But it DOES seem forever … GoBlueWolverine first heard about Ryan Mallett at the 2005 Army All-American Game ... not the '06 game but the year before, '05 ... when we got wind that there were this big sophomore QB in north Texas who liked Michigan and who the Wolverines were already recruiting - big time. We put the name in our memory bank, and then at the '05 Michigan camp, there he was -- this huge guy with an arm so strong that receivers were jumping out of the way of the ball, in fear. The Wolverines immediately jumped to the head of the recruiting pack for Mallett and were never really challenged by other schools. After a brief flirtation with Texas in the winter/spring of 2006, Ryan committed to Michigan on April 26th, 2006, the Wolverines' 4th verbal commitment. And at his official visit, he played a big role in convincing wide receiver Toney Clomons to be Blue as well!
GoBlueWolverine Commentary:
Committing super-early can ‘bury a kid’ rankings-wise, but Mallett's stock keep on rising throughout his season year -- from the summer '06 Elite 11 QB camp where he recorded the highest competition-score ever in the Drop Back Competition, to a commanding performance in Cincinnati at the Herbstreit Challenge, to the top QB performance at this year's Army All-American game. Mallett rose to the top of the heap. And now, suddenly, the legendary high schooler is now a brand new baby freshman at Michigan … from the top of the ladder to the bottom, getting his butt chewed by Gittleson like every other Wolverine freshman! Entering U-M early, in January, is no easy task --
Justin Boren
found that out a year ago --suddenly thrownfrom high school into college academics, and at mid-year when everyone else has had a semester to adjust and meet friends, etc. But Boren managed it a year ago and, if we know Ryan, once string-time rolls around, the snow melts and spring practice starts he'll be back at the top quickly -- and will get some “PT” during the 2007 season. And what will Wolverine fans see in Ryan Mallett? A classic dropback quarterback with the best arm ever, excellent accuracy, touch and vision, and a guy with natural outgoing leadership ability. The whole package, as they say.
