From Inside Carolina: Evaluations have already begin with members of the 2008 class -- including extending several verbal scholarship offers. Here is a Matthews (North Carolina) Butler defensive back who already has a couple notable offers.

After attending the Tar Heels’ July individual camp, Robert Blanton, a 6-foot-1 165-pound defensive back from Matthews (N.C.) Butler, joined the small fraternity of rising juniors with UNC offers.

“We just went up there, did some DB drills, some one-on-ones, and showed our talent,” said Blanton. “After we left my coach told me [they offered me]. Coach [John] Bunting told my coach that I had an offer from them while I was working out at the camp.”

The Tar Heels aren’t the only school to offer Blanton this early in the process.

“Michigan offered me like June 19th when I went up there,” said Blanton. “Coach [Lloyd] Carr offered me while I was in his office before I left.”

A few weeks back, Blanton took an unofficial visit to South Carolina, but wasn’t offered a scholarship at that time.

Besides joining teammate and North Carolina verbal commit Ryan Houston on his trips to Chapel Hill, Blanton doesn’t believe he’ll be unofficially visiting any schools during his junior season.

While Blanton acknowledges its way too early for him to name any true favorites, he admits a handful of schools have caught his attention.

“Probably, Michigan, Notre Dame, Maryland, and South Carolina,” said Blanton. “They all have pretty good academics and I also like their football teams.”

During his sophomore season, Blanton picked off six passes and recorded approximately 100 tackles earning him a spot on both the all-conference and all-county teams.
