Martell Webb may be on his way to Ann Arbor on a football scholarship, but
that has done nothing to quell his love for the game of basketball. The dual-sport
standout will be taking advantage of every remaining opportunity to get in a
little roundball action…both in the winter at Pontiac Northern, and this
summer on the AAU circuit.
"I've just been working out and playing AAU," said Webb regarding
what he has been up to recently. "It's been going well. I've been playing
with the (Tri City) Cobras and The Family. I'm going to the Peach Jam with The
Family."
Webb will be playing in a few other AAU events as well, but he won't be spending
all of his time this summer on the hardwood. He'll also be working on his pass-catching
skills in preparation for his senior campaign on the gridiron and his future
as a Michigan Wolverine. With his college choice now out of the way, the only
question left unanswered is at what position will he line up at….wide
receiver or tight end?
"Coach English and Coach Carr came by my school," said Webb. "They
said they'll see what position I should be at when I get there. They said if
I get bigger they'll put me at tight end."
Webb will get an opportunity to state his case for wide receiver on the practice
fields next to Schembechler Hall this upcoming weekend. He'll also get a chance
to spend some face-time with a future teammate that has quickly become a friend.
"I'm coming up to the camp… probably on Sunday," he said. "Ryan Mallett is supposed to be up there too. I've been talking to him. We just kick
it. He's real cool. We communicate like twice per week. We talk about some of
everything, but mainly about going to school next year. It'll be cool to see
him."
