Devon Torrence Names Leaders

Devon Torrence

The Michigan Wolverines' recent decision to offer Canton, Ohio athlete Devon Torrence gave the Maize and Blue more footing in his recruitment, but was it enough to move them up his leader board? The dual sport start discusses his leaders, and how baseball will play into his choice.

The offers keep rolling in for Canton South junior Devon Torrence. The two-sport athlete got word that the Michigan Wolverines were joining the club during a recent visit from Michigan quarterback coach Scot Loeffler. Torrence, who is being recruited by Michigan as an athlete, was a visitor for the Michigan-Ohio State game last year and said he would like to visit Ann Arbor again during the summer.

An aspect that makes Torrence's recruitment even more interesting is the fact he is a top baseball prospect. He indicated he plans on playing both football and baseball at the college he chooses. With his high draft status in the 2007 June Major League Baseball Draft, Torrence said he would be open to leaving college early to pursue baseball. “I would consider it," he said. "It just depends on what type of situation it is and if it would be best for me and my family at that time.”

Of his impressive offer list right now, two clearly stick out. When asked if which schools were atop his leader-board, Torrence didn't hesitate. “Arizona State and North Carolina State," he said. However, that would clearly change if the in-state Buckeyes come calling with an offer.

At this point, the only Big Ten school that hasn’t tendered Torrence a scholarship is Ohio State. That, though, is the offer he covets the most.

"It's no secret that I'm a Buckeye in my heart," Torrence said in a recent interview with Scout.com. "I really feel that Ohio kids should play for their state if given the chance. But if Ohio State does not offer me I have to seriously look at Michigan.”

Torrence will camp at Ohio State during the summer for a day in hopes of gaining his most wanted offer. If he doesn't get it, that could provide the Maize and Blue with the opening they need.

Torrence indicated he wants to make a decision before the end of summer.
