Positives:
Massey has a very tall, lanky frame with room to add even more
bulk. He played at between 275-280 last year and has really made some strides
putting weight on, getting up to 290. His long arms are ideal to gain separation.
He has experience in a 3-4 system and shows good football intelligence and pursuit
angles in space. Massey plays with a good lean and has a nasty streak at times.
He's a tough, blue collar player that will be a great influence on his teammates.
Negatives:
Massey has a very hard time gaining a leverage advantage because
of his tall frame. Defenders get into his body too often and he cannot anchor
against double teams. His limited pass rush ability will prevent many teams
from penciling him in as a defensive end in a 4-3. He doesn’t fire off
the ball well and his overall quickness is lacking. He needs to get stronger
and defend the run better. Tackles with his arms too often and needs to polish
his technique.
Overall:
Massey will likely find his chance at the next level as a defensive
end. He had his best playing days as a defensive end in Michigan’s 3-4
defensive schemes of the 2004 season and has potential here. He body weight
has finally caught up with his very long frame, which is a plus. His size, arm
length, and experience at the 3-4 defensive end position will give him some
looks from teams that employ that scheme. Teams are always experimenting with
players at the line positions in this scheme and I expect Massey to make it
into a camp. He could spend a couple of years on a practice squad to develop.
Massey has been doing workouts in Cleveland along with various places across
the country. He has really dedicated himself to working hard and expect him
to latch on somewhere. One AFC team I spoke with is also considering him as
an offensive tackle project.
