His Recruiting Story
There was never really a question in Cobrani Mixon's mind regarding what school
he'd like to attend. The Michigan Wolverines were always his favorite, and camping
in Ann Arbor every summer only solidified that feeling. That said, he was a
little upset when he did not receive an offer early in his junior year. A person
that was instrumental in convincing him to be a little more patient was former
teammate and current Wolverine, Mister Simpson. The former Colerain standout
had been telling Mixon that Michigan would eventually come a callin'. "I
keep telling him that he needs to be patient," said Simpson back in April.
"I didn't get offered until Michigan's camp over the summer."
On Friday May 13th that advice finally paid off in the form of a Michigan offer.
"My coach called Coach Carr. He told me that he liked what I had done and
what I had achieved, and he told me that Michigan had a scholarship waiting
on me," Mixon said.
Mixon didn't make a decision right away, opting instead to keep his options
open for a bit. He also held offers from Louisville, West Virginia, Miami of
Ohio, and Kent State, but none of those teams made his top four. "I'd say
it's Florida, Michigan, LSU, and Tennessee," Mixon said.
In the months after the offer, it became more and more clear that Ann Arbor
would be Mixon's college destination. A few weeks after his Maize and Blue offer,
he informed Scout.com of his probable destination. "It's still probably
going to be Michigan," he said. "Unless someone makes me change my
mind...it's not impossible." One month after that on July 26th, 2005, Mixon
pledged to the Wolverines.
After making his commitment, Mixon explained why it took some time after the
Michigan camp to make his final decision. "My mom wanted me to check some
things out just to make sure I was doing the right thing," he said. I still
feel the same about Michigan. There's nothing that will change my mind. Other
schools still call and send letters, but I'm going to Michigan."
GoBlueWolverine Commentary
Cobrani Mixon had 100 tackles and nine sacks in an abbreviated season his junior
year while helping Colerain bring home the state title. His numbers may have
been even better had it not been for serious knee injury that he sustained near
the midway point.
In week five of that year he suffered a torn ACL and a torn meniscus. However,
he returned to the field in week eight and played all of the way through the
state title game. "He finished the season playing in the state championship
game on Saturday and then had surgery on Tuesday," Colerain coach Kerry
Coombs told us last month. "His rehab is going extremely well. He is a
special player."
According to most observers, the traits that make Mixon so effective are his
intensity, speed, and his physical style of play. Those same terms can be used
to describe the current NFL All-Pro that Mixon tries to emulate. "I'm a
hard hitter," Mixon said. "I'm like Ray Lewis."
"I'm quick and I know I'm athletic enough to stop the run and defend
the pass," said Mixon. "I'm a true inside linebacker that can shake
blocks and make plays between the tackles and I can also make plays from sideline
to sideline. I'm good against the pass but I'm better against the run."
Scout.com scouting report: Mixon is one of the top
prospects in the Buckeye State and one of the finest linebacker prospects in
the Midwest. True inside linebacker that does a great job at shedding blocks
and getting to the ball-carrier. Lateral movement is exceptional. Tough competitor.
Wrap-up tackler. Good nose for the ball and overall athletic ability. Hustles,
chases and gives good effort in pursuit.
