His Recruiting Story
Greg Mathews was born a Buckeye! His mother is an Ohio State alumnus, and her mother even taught at OSU. But Greg, living in Orlando, grew up a Miami fan. And early on the Hurricanes were his favorite recruiting-wise as well. But then spent the whole week at the Michigan Camp in June, and he went from there right to OSU for an unofficial visit, and things changes for him.
"I don't think I want to stay in-state," he said in the late summer, "but if I do it will probably be Miami. Michigan was cool though. They seemed to show a lot more love, and everyone there was cool."
Michigan became his leader, but OSU was still a big threat. "My mom is a big fan of [OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel]," he said. And, in addition, "Ted Ginn is a cousin of mine. I didn't know that before; my mom told me."
Naturally Mathews and his mom came up to Ann Arbor for the Michigan vs. Ohio State game -- in fact this was his official Michigan visit. And coming in he said, "Michigan is probably my leader right now."
The Buckeyes beat Michigan of course, but Mathews was still impressed with the Wolverines. So much in fact that he committed. "He committed to Michigan," his mother told GoBlueWolverine when they got home. "He really loved it up there and told them (Michigan coaches) that was where he wanted to go. It was his decision and he was very impressed with the school and the commitment the coaches made to him."
Why Michigan? "I liked the atmosphere up there and chillin' with the players. And I really like Coach Campbell a lot," Mathews said. "He's one of the best coaches in the country and he's a great person."
However, this recruitment was not done. He told the Michigan coaches that he was going to visit Ohio State and Florida State, and U-M gave him their blessing.
He made his OSU visit on the Jan. 7 weekend -- but when they got home his mother told us, "It is certainly correct that he is still committed to Michigan."
Next up was Florida State on January 21st. But afterwards he said, "I told them I'm sticking with my commitment to Michigan. I'll sign with Michigan on Feb. 1."
GoBlueWolverine Scouting Report and Commentary
Greg Mathews is a classic 'possession receiver'. GoBlueWolverine got to scout him five different times, and knows his game pretty well. He is big, strong and tough -- and he relished going over the middle for the tough catch. He has hands of glue and likes taking a hit and delivering a blow back again. His speed is average (4.6ish in the 40), but speed isn't his game. The 3rd-and-ten catch over the middle is his forte.
As a comparion to a recent Michigan player: think
Jason Avant
. Mathews is two inches taller than Avant, whereas Avant has a 0.1 sec. advantage in the 40 yard dash.
