Michigan Not Finished with Quarterbacks
When Michigan received the news that Texas quarterbacks Nick Stephens of Flower Mound High School, and Taylor Potts of Abilene High School had decided to decline offers to play for the Wolverines, attention immediately turned to Ventura, Calif., High School slinger Lee Mondol.
On Thursday, the Mondol's will head for Michigan on an official visit, with the chance for Lee to realize a life-long dream. "We're from Michigan, and my wife graduated from Michigan. It has been Lee's dream his entire life to play for the Wolverines," Lee's father, J.K. Mondol told GoBlueWolverine.com on Tuesday. "We've been in contact with Coach DeBord and we're going to take a look at what they have to offer. If they offer a scholarship Lee will absolutely accept right there."
J.K Mondol said Michigan coach Ron English stopped by the Mondol household last month, and they sent a tape to Michigan for review. However, it wasn't the first contact the Mondol's have had with U-M. "He went back to their camp two years ago," J.K. said. "He couldn't go last year because of commitments with his basketball team."
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Mondol led Ventura to an 11-2 record in 2005, culminating in a 14-7 loss to Moorpark in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division IV finals.
J.K. Mondol said that over 80 schools contacted Lee, but had his heart set on the Big Ten. When it appeared a Michigan offer was not going to materialize, they started looking at Holy Cross. "They have really rolled out the red carpet for him," J.K said. "The don't have scholarships, but they have other types of financial aid for players."
For the 2005 season, Mondol had 198 completions out of 339 attempts for 3,172-yards with 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also had 93 carries for 371-yards and five TD's.
Note: Mondol could also end up being a preferred walk-on candidate.
