McKenzie Mathews Coming In This Weekend

New York defensive end McKenzie Mathews was scheduled to make his official visit to Michigan for the OSU game, but his team was still playing in the state tournament. He has rescheduled -- and it's for this weekend.

GoBlueWolverine spoke just briefly Thursday evening to the mother of McKenzie Mathews, the 6-foot-2, 240-pound defensive end from Christian Brothers Academy, Syracuse, N.Y.

"McKenzie isn't in, but you will probably see him this weekend -- he is going to Michigan for his official visit tomorrow (Friday)."

Mathews had scheduled an OSU game official visit, but Christian Brothers was still alive in the New York state playoffs. After going undefeated and winning the championship in 2004, Christian Brothers lost their only game of the 2005 season that Nov. 18 weekend, ending their hopes for a second straight championship.

So Mathews has gotten to turn his attention to recruiting. He made an official visit to Pitt the Dec. 2 weekend, and is coming to Ann Arbor this weekend. He is also considering Ohio State -- he made an official visit to the Buckeyes for their October 14 game vs. MSU. Those may be his top three schools.

Being from upstate New York, the question arises whether he is a friend of Wolverine RB Mike Hart. The answer -- yes. As he told GBW in October, the two talk on the phone often. You can bet Hart will be his host this weekend.

Mathews is Scout.com's #62 East prospect. He averaged eight tackles and almost two sacks a game this season. He is also a strong student, with a 3.0+ GPA and an 1160 SAT, and would like to major in accounting.
