The battle between the two tradition-rich programs will take place Wednesday,
December 28 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, and will air live ESPN at 7 p.m.
CST (8pm EST).
This will be Michigan's second appearance in the Alamo Bowl and marks the return
of Lloyd Carr to the site of his first bowl game as the head coach. The Wolverines
lost his inaugural outing to Texas A&M 22-20 back in 1995. This time around,
Carr is hoping for a different outcome.
"It's been 10 years and my recollection is San Antonio is a great city
and our players had a great time," Carr said. "The opportunity to
play Nebraska again…the last time I had an opportunity to be a part of
a team that played against them was in the Fiesta Bowl back in the 1980's. I've
known Bill Callahan for a long time. When he was here at Wisconsin…they
had some of their best teams when he was running their offense. I'm sure it's
going to be a great game."
Callahan is now in the second year of his rebuilding process in Lincoln. After
going 5-6 in his initial campaign, the 7-4 record this season followed by the
Alamo bowl birth is another step in the right direction for the Husker program.
"We've grown quite a bit throughout the course of this season," Callahan
said. "We've had some excellent challenges throughout our schedule. There
are certain ones that we've capitalized on and other ones that we didn't. Of
course, doing that with a young club, a young system, and players that are just
starting to mold into the type of system that we a trying to get them to execute
has been challenging, but satisfying. There have been moments and flashes in
games…the last game of course against Colorado where it all came together.
We're a young football team that is really learning how to win. We've gone through
some growing pains in a lot of areas, and to have an opportunity to play a team
like Michigan in a bowl game, I know, will be really challenging to our team."
The Wolverines lead the all-time series between the two teams 3-1-1. The most
recent match-up took place in 1985 in the aforementioned Fiesta Bowl. The Maize
and Blue came out on top that day, 27-23.
