Miami on Top for Mathews, but Mich Not Far Behind

Orlando, Fla., is about three and a half hours south by car from Miami. It is also home to one of the top high school prospects in the state in Edgewater wide receiver Greg Mathews. The three-star talent is spending a lot of time in Miami, including this weekend as the Hurricanes took care of Colorado. However, a couple northern schools are trying to get him to look the other way.
"I'd say right now that Miami is number one," Wide receiver
Greg Mathews
of Edgewater High School in Orlando, Fla., said on Sunday. "Michigan, Ohio State, North Carolina State, Alabama, and Virginia Tech are all close though."
One thing is keeping the talented prospect from making his commitment to the Hurricanes. "They haven't offered me yet," he said. "My coach said they are looking hard at me, and that they usually don't make offers until after the season."
Mathews said has been making the trek to Miami often, including this past weekend to catch their match up with Colorado. Miami won easily 23-3. "Oh man, I had a great time," Mathews said. "I got to hang out with the players and it was a lot of fun. I went down there with
Lorenzo Edwards
, he's a star player from my school. After the game we got to hang out in South Beach, then we went over to one of Lorenzo's relatives to watch the Michigan - Wisconsin game. I liked that trick play they ran, when (Mario) Manningham scored the touchdown. Michigan struggled at times, but they have a lot of talent on that team." Michigan lost 23-20 to even their record at 2-2.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Mathews said he talks with Ohio State wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell every week, and that the Buckeyes are recruiting him hard. He said he speaks with Michigan receivers coach Erik Campbell at times, but not as often as every week. Does he plan to visit the northern schools? "I haven't set up any official visits yet," he said. "I take the new SAT on Oct. 8 so I'm going to wait until after I do that before setting up any visits. I know I'll visit Miami and if they offer I'll probably commit. But if they don't offer than I'm definitely going to visit the other schools."
Edgewater is off to a 5-0 start on the season, outscoring opponents 172-62. On Friday they took care of Apopka 32-13. "I had 102 or 103-yards receiving and three touchdowns," he said. "I also had a pick. I think I have like over 300 yards and seven TD's on the season."
Mathews said all of the schools are recruiting him for wide receiver, but that is not necessarily his favorite position. "I play cornerback too," he said. "And I love it. I wouldn't mind if schools started looking at me there too."
