Season, Visits, Begin for Georgia LB Toryan Smith
Posted Sep 1, 2005
With two games already under his belt this season, linebacker Toryan Smith of Rome, Ga., High School is set to begin his set of official visits. This week he start off with Oklahoma.
The season is already two games old for Rome, Ga., High School and top linebacker
. In the last game, one goal just eluded the talented Peach State star. "We have a good team this year and our first two games have been against pretty decent teams," he said. "I really wanted to get a shutout against (Cedartown), but we fumbled on the 10-yard-line and they got a field goal." The final score was 21-3, upping the Wolves record to 2-0. They began the season with a 24-12 win over Murray County. Smith has already racked up 26 tackles on the season.
With the beginning of the season, along with school starting, the time is also here for those fortunate enough to have colleges courting them to begin official visits. Smith begins his journey this weekend as he travels to Oklahoma for the first of his five allotted visits. "We're off this week so I won't have to rush," he said. "I was going to go later but this weekend is better since I don't have a game, I'll be able to spend more time with the coaches and team. I was up there in the spring with my dad and this time my mom and sister will be coming up to see the school." He said no school leads at this time.
Michigan is also on the visit list for the 6-foot-0, 241-pound Smith. "I'm still set for Michigan on Nov. 11 for the Ohio State game," he said. "One visit I was going to take was to Nebraska, but that didn't work out. I don't have another visit set up yet and am really not sure where I'll go." He is also set to visit Notre Dame on Oct. 15, and Florida on Nov. 25.
Even though coaches haven't been allowed to call players (the contact period opens once again today) Smith hasn't been out of touch. "I get a lot of text messages and I call the coaches regularly," he said. "I spoke to Michigan Coach (Mike) Debord last week. We just talked about my visit and he made sure I knew where I'd fit in with Michigan." Smith said he would most likely make his decision sometime after his last visit. "I'm not going to wait until Signing Day," he said. "It could be shortly after my Florida visit or it could be in Jan."
