The No. 2 cornerback in the country according to Scout.com reports 17 offers so far this recruiting year. With the football season set to begin in less then a month, Devin Ross is not taking any time off before practice, and will unofficially visit three schools this weekend. GoBlueWolverine.com spoke with the five-star prospect Monday.
The cornerback position does not appear to be a position of major need for the University of Michigan football team this recruiting year. With incoming freshman
Johnny Sears
reportedly qualified, most of the attention appears to be focused on safeties. However, one target that is garnering serious interest from the Wolverines is
Devin Ross
of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., High School. The No. 2 rated cornerback in the nation according to Scout.com reports 17 offers, including a recent one from Michigan.
With the football season fast approaching and schools gearing up for fall practice, most kids are taking this time to relax and mentally prepare for the work ahead. However, Ross will take a little trip this weekend. "On Thursday I'm going up to Washington, then I'll visit Oregon and Oregon State," he said. "All of them have offered. So far Nebraska is the only school I've set up an official visit for, and that is for Sept. 2. I'm trying to get one set up with Oklahoma but it's not set."
Michigan recently jumped into the picture are Michigan defensive backs coach Ron English observed Ross at a recent combine. An offer shortly followed the event and the talented player recently spoke with English. "He's recruiting me for corner," Ross said. "He said they need me to come in and compete for playing time right away. I'm really interested in Michigan, for sure."
Rancho Cucamonga is near Pomona, the former stomping grounds of the Michigan defensive backs coach. A rather small community, it isn't surprising that people from the same area know each other. Such is the case with the Ross's and the English family. "My dad went to school with Coach English's wife," Ross said. "We didn't know that until we started talking to them me being recruited by Michigan. It's pretty cool."
Family ties aside, there is one lurking recruiting Goliath that may decide the fate of the five-star Ross. USC, also in attendance at the recent combine, had yet to offer Ross. "If USC were to offer it would be hard to turn them down," he said. "But I think I am going to take my time and really look at all the schools to make sure I make the right decision."
Ross is listed at 5-foot-11, 180-pounds but said he is growing. "I'm pretty close to 6-foot now," he said.
