West coast recruiting is now in full swing for Michigan, and U-M defensive backs coach Ron English is on the road checking out the top talent in the region for which he is responsible. One stop on his travels was Maryvale High School in Phoenix, the home of cornerback Brantwon Bowser. The talented Bowser recently received his second offer. Is one from the Wolverines on the horizon?
At 6-foot-1, 185-pounds and claiming 4.4 speed in the 40, cornerback
Brantwon Bowser
has the measurables Michigan defensive backs coach Ron English looks for in his players. Two schools, hometown Arizona State and San Jose State, have thrown their hats in the ring in hopes of landing the talented defensive star. "Arizona State offered first and I know a lot about them since they are so close," he said. "San Jose State just offered but I don't know a lot about their program. Right now Arizona State leads because they were the first to offer."
A plethora of top football programs have stopped by the Maryvale campus since the May evaluation period has begun. "Michigan and Nebraska were here last week and my coach set up a little combine for us to work out," Bowser said. "Michigan told my coach they want to offer, but I didn't hear what Nebraska had to say." Bowser said Colorado, USC, Oregon and Cal have all visited.
What is holding the others from offering? "I need to bring my grades up," he said. "Right now I have a 2.5 grade-point-average and I think a lot of schools are waiting to see how I do with that. I take the SAT in June."
Bowser said one of the main things he is looking for in his college choice is good chemistry with the coaching staff. "I want to be around people I can trust and feel comfortable with," he said. "If Michigan were to offer I'd have to really think about committing. I'd have to sit down with my mom and talk about it. She wants me to stay home but has said she'll support whatever I do."
The Michigan staff will get a closer look at Bowser in June as he said he and teammate
Jermaine Williams
plan on attending the Wolverine summer camp. "I'm going to the Scout.com Combine on May 14 in Torrance," he said. "I'm not sure about any others."
