Round 2, Pick No. 1: David Baas Selected by 49er's
San Francisco Head Coach Mike Nolan said he projects Baas to compete as a guard as former Pro Bowler Jeremy Newberry is entrenched at the starting center. "He will line up at right guard and will compete and earn that position," Coach Nolen said. "The right side of our line needs to be a little bit more power-oriented. At 6-foot-5 320-pounds, I think we nailed it on that pretty good. Power is his strength, and he's athletic."
Being power oriented is what Baas brings to the table, and it's also something that he loves to do. "Power and aggression and toughness is my game," he said. "I love to get after people. So I'm ready to go; I'm fired up." Look for Baas to compete with Eric Heitmann at right guard. Along with young star Justin Smiley and solid veteran Newberry, the interior group in San Francisco could grow to be one of the leagues top units.
Baas' former teammate, Ernest Shazor, didn't hear his name called on the first day but look for him to go in the fourth round; I spoke with several teams prior to the draft that had Ernest on the second day of the draft and may still have interest. Along with Shazor, fullback Kevin Dudley and cornerback Markus Curry have the best chance of the remaining Wolverines to be drafted.
