Update on Calif. DB Chris Richards
When Richards committed to Michigan last summer, many asked, "who is this kid?" Even more interesting was the fact that Richards would be grey shirting, making him the first commitment of the recruiting class of 2006. His close relationship with Michigan defensive backs coach Ron English played a factor in the early offer, but hardly anyone had seen him play. When GoBlueWolverine Magazine met Richards at the Nike Camp in San Diego, the first impression was that, while he had talent, he had the appearance of a 15-year-old. It turns out we weren't too far off the mark as Richards had just turned 16. The decision to wait a year was made by the family with the intention of giving Richards time to develop physically, it seemed like a perfect fit.
However, after a stellar performance in the Jan. 2 CaliFlorida bowl, coupled with attention and recent offers from Cal and Boise St., The 5 foot 11, 165-pound Richards began to re-think his pledge to the Wolverines. He recently told GBW that he was concerned that -- should he postpone his signature until sometime after Signing Day so he could look around -- his Michigan scholarship offer would disappear. He mentioned taking visits to Cal, and possibly Florida State, and said he was even getting pressure from his brother, Rashaad, to attend Boise State. Rashaad Richards is a freshman cornerback for the Broncos.
Richards said he would not be taking any other visits. There was some discussion with Carr regarding which class he would join. "Coach Carr and I talked about me coming in with this class," Richards said. "But I am going to stay a grey shirt. Coach Carr said I could do whatever I wanted, so the option is there if I decide to come in with this class, but right now I'm going to keep things the way they are."
Richards is considering participating on the track team this spring. "There are three weeks left and I think I'm going to go ahead and run track," he said.
