Michigan ended its three game losing streak in dramatic fashion at Crisler Arena Saturday afternoon by defeating the 19th ranked Irish.
The first half was a stanza of streaks. The score was 11-9 Michigan at the 13 minute mark when Notre Dame went cold. Led by a
Brent Petway
dunk and two lay-ups by walk-on forward John Andrew, Michigan scored the next 9 points to go up 20-9 at the 7:42 mark. After trading baskets for the next 5 1/2 minutes Michigan led 32-21, only to returned the favor by getting stuck at the 32 point mark for the final 2 minutes of the half while Notre Dame made a 9 point run of its own. At the half Michigan led 32-30.
The second half was a see-saw battle until the 15:47 mark when Michigan again sent cold -- this time sitting at 43 point points until the 11:30 mark when Notre Dame led 51-43. Then the game once again swung with Michigan scoring 8 straight (a dunk by Petway and 2 pointers by
Daniel Horton
, only his 3rd and 4th points,
Dion Harris
and
Graham Brown
) to tie it 51-51 at the 7:44 mark. From there the game stayed tight, with Daniel Horton getting hot (with 2 treys and a duece) to keep the Wolverines in the game. It was 56-56 at the 4:06 mark and 60-58 Notre Dame with 1:53 to go. Then Notre Dame missed, and Daniel Horton missed in return -- but got his own rebound and tosses it back out. HOwever
Chris Hunter
missed and Notre Dame rebounded with 00:45 to go. Then came the crucial play of the game -- Daniel Horton made a steal and was fouled as he made a break-away layup with 20 seconds to go. Horton sunk the three throw to put Michigan in the lead for the first time in the seondd half, 61-60. Brent Petway blocked a last second Notre Dame field goal attempt to seal the victory.
Game over, Michigan 61, Notre Dame 60.
Final stats:
Michigan shot .472 for the game, to .407 for Notre Dame.
Michigan was 6-17 (.353) on 3 pointers, to 6-10 (.300) for Notre Dame.
Michigan was 5-8 (.556) on free throws, to 6-10 (.600) for Notre Dame.
