***(7/22/04 Changes)***
The primer had to be broken into two parts because of space limitations. Part
1 covers the commits and recruits from the 2004 and 2005 classes, while part
2 covers the recruits from the 2006 and 2007 classes. A link to part 2 is locted
under the "Class of 2006 Commits and Recruits" heading at the bottom
of the update. Those that wish to jump to part 2 immediately can do so by clicking
here.
The links have been updated for Ronald Coleman, Jerret Smith, Chris Douglas-Roberts,
Jevohn Shepherd, Eric Boateng, Ryan Wright, Deshawn Sims, K'len Morris, Daequan Cook, David Lighty, Brandan Wright, Kevin Durant, Daryl Augustine, Tywon Lawson,
Alex Stepheson, Matthew Shaw, Tory Jackson, Scott Reynolds, Tom Herzog, Derrick Caracter, James Dews, Devin Brennan-McBride, Ramar Smith and Leon Freeman..
New players on the list are Ben McCauley, Harvey Hale, and Isaiah Dahlman. The
recruiting profile info has been updated almost all of the aforementioned players.
Players removed were the mystery 2004 recruit, Eric Devendorf, and Tracy Smith.
Format Change
One significant change to the list is the addition of the
"target level" and "interest" indexes to each profile. Target
level refers to our OPINION on where each respective player
stands on the current recruiting list based on all of the information gathered
up to this point. Interest refers to the how strongly each respective player
is considering the Wolverines at this point in time. Each category is rated
on a scale from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
5 - Interest couldn't be any stronger
4 - Very strong interest. Only a matter of time before they're
5's
3 - Interested with the potential to move up with more familiarity
and evaluation
2 - Limited interest
1 - Low interest
The list is ordered first by Target Level and then sub-ordered by Interest
level. These ratings can change from update to update, so keep an eye on them!
This list will be updated regularly as new players are discovered and players
already listed make their decisions. The link to the Primer will reside permanently
on the left NAV bar under the Best Guess Recruiting Class section.

Ron was Michigan’s first commit for the 2004 class. RC has one of the best strokes
in the entire midwest region. I witnessed him drain 10 straight threes in warm-ups
at the Nike MDC. He’s improving his off of the dribble game and will be a force
in the Big Ten for years to come. GBW will have more on RC very shortly.

I always come away impressed by what a floor general Smith is. Jerret is the quintessential
pass first shoot second point guard and is not a player that observers would ever
classify as selfish. Visited Michigan again on May 29, 2003 and committed on June
4. Jerret is an excellent passer that sees the court really well. The young floor
leader is a perfect complement to the wing talent Michigan has brought in already,
and will be bringing in over the next few years. Some observers were down on him
after Roumulus' playoff loss to Belleville and his subsequent early summer struggles
in AAU. However, he contines to impress when visiting Ann Arbor for open gyms
and is a kid the current crop of players love to play with. Does have to work
to gain consistency on his shot, improve his defense, and regain his confidence.
Had strong assist performances at both the NBPA and ABCD camps.

GBW broke the news in early February of UM interest in this little known Canadian
wing. He has been called a 6-4 Brent Petway by some who have seen him, but can
also put it on the floor. His skills have caught Michigan's attention and assistant
Coach Charles Ramsey has already made a few trips across the border to check him
out. An April open gym session wowed coaches in attendance (and Coach Ramsey was
once again there). Coach Amaker soon followed up with a visit of his own, and
the Wolverines are the prohibitive favorite for this monster sleeper. Has gotten
gradually better at the shoe camps as the summer has gone on. Still, he has turned
in his best efforts North of the border...the best of which came in a 42 point
outburst at the Nike All-Canada Camp.

Good inside-out game with the body to guard bigger players and the quickness to
guard smaller ones. Nice stroke for his size. Ranked number #21 nationally by
the insiders. The Wolverines are showing serious interest. Coach Tommy Amaker
made a trip to New Jersey the week of February 2nd and in the Spring during the
evaluation period to see Costner in action. Michigan made the his trimmed down
list. The eight schools in question are: Indiana, Michigan, Kansas, Connecticut,
Seton Hall, UCLA, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina State.. Has officially visited
UCLA (where he had breakfast with legendary Coach John Wooden) and unofficially
visited N.C. State, UConn, St. Joes's, and Seton Hall.

Ranked a 5 star player and the #1 center in the 2005 class by TheInsidersHoops.com.
He broke his foot in the first game of the year, but schools have still been hot
and heavy after this England transplant. Assistant Coach Chuck Swenson visited
Boatneg in mid January and were again in during the first few days of the evaluation
period. Eric made his way to Ann Arbor in March on an unofficial visit and reportedly
enjoyed the trip. Tripped to UCLA soon after. Against most adversaries the Wolverines
stood an excellent shot at landing this premiere big man. Their odds dwindled, however, when the Duke Blue-Devils jumped into the fray and made him
their #1 post target. It's sounding more and
more like Duke will ultimately be his pick.

Wright is tremendous athlete from north of the border. According to West Hill
Collegiate head coach Wayne Dawkins (Jevohn Shepherd's coach), Ryan also had an
impressive showing at the open gym that Shepherd exploded at. Visited Michigan
in early June and really enjoyed his time in Ann Arbor. Traveled to Michigan State
afterward and both schools subsequently moved into his top 3. The Wolverines haven't
extended an offer yet but he could emerge as a top target before all is said and
done. Had a monster summer on the camp circuit, raising his stock tremendously.
Outplayed Eric Boateng in two separate events.

Long and can really shoot it from the perimeter. Needs to get stronger and tougher.
New England Playaz (Price’s AAU team) Coach Mike Jarvis Jr. made mention
of his pupil’s strengths in an earlier interview with TheInsiders.com. "He's
a smart kid who is great academically and is just starting to really learn the
game," Jarvis told TheInsiders. "He’s got great upside. He just
needs to work on his ball-handling skills and personal strength. He’s got
to learn to play inside and out." Had a strong first day at the Adidas camp,
but fell off a bit as the camp went on. Should visit Michigan in the fall.

Some consider Chris Douglas-Roberts the top prospect in the state of Michigan
for the 2005 class. The Cass Tech swingman has an outstanding handle for his size
and has demonstrated ability to run the point. He’s also very crafty in
getting his shot off when he gets into the lane. His shooting ability is underrated,
but it still needs improvement, as does his strength. Has been compared to Jamal Crawford by many pundits, including Prep Spotlight’s Vince Baldwin. Kansas,
which once figured very prominently in his recruitment, has fallen down Douglas-Roberts'
list with the commitment of PG Mario Chalmers. His list of schools is still vast,
with Michigan, Michigan State, UCLA, Oregon, and Cincinnati amongst those still
fighting. Has a goal of being ranked a consensus top 10 player and probably won't
decide until the late signing period. Summer performances thus far haven't earned
him that distinction. Plans to cut list down to five at the end of the summer.

Smooth, but unselfish scoring guard that can handle both back court positions
equally well. Most impressive has been he consistent stroke from the perimeter
and his physical prepairedness for college right away. Considered by most to be
the top player in the state of New Mexico and was selected for the ABCD camp two
years in a row. Reminded us of a poor man's Mitch Richmond.

At 6-8 and over 300 lbs., this big man eats up A LOT of space in the paint.
Hailing from the same school as former Michigan star, Robert Traylor,…
the comparisons between the two have been frequent. However, Sparks has a little
more finesse in his game and is not the athlete the Tractor was. He plays mostly
below the rim and has a few nice post moves and he can also hit the 15-footer.
If he can keep his weight under control, he can have a special season. (Word
has it that he has done just that).
