Valley Christian (San Jose, Calif) DE Jeff Schweiger visited Michigan earlier this fall, his only visit so far. Are the Wolverines still in the hunt?

Michigan has been in the final five for Valley Christian (San Jose, Calif) star defensive end Jeff Schweiger (Aug. 30 official visit, Stan. Nike Camp stats: 6-4, 245 lbs., 4.56 in the 40, 4.11 in the shuttle, 31 bench press reps, 30.9 inch vertical ... 3.0 GPA) since he narrowed his list down before the season. He said in September that he had USC, Okalahoma, and Miami on top, but that it changed every week.. GBW went down to San Mateo Saturday, where Schweiger's Warriors took on Juniperro Serra High School, to take another look at the talented player and see if Michigan was still on his list. Wolverine fans may recall the name of Serra as the high school of former U-M quarterback Tom Brady.

Valley Christian had an easy time of it, taking their record to 8-1 with a convincing 24-7 vicotry over the Padres on a drizzly afternoon. After a scoreless first quarter Valley Christian exploded for 17 unanswered points to take a 17-0 lead at halftime. Schweiger spent most of the day at his defensive end position and was only used on offense as a blocker on short-yardage situations.

The 6-4, 245 lb Schweiger forced two fumbles on consecutive plays in the third quarter, with Valley Christian recovering the second one, turning it into their final score to put the game at 24-0. Serra scored a late TD to make it a final at 24-7.

The big man lines up on the strong side and most teams have been avoiding him. Not so with Serra.

After the game Padre head coach Patrick Walsh said, "The only thing we did was we slid our protection to (Schweiger). We didn't scheme around him, we're going to do what we're going to do and he beat us. He's a great player."

Schweiger agreed. "Yeah, they came at me more," he said. "They put two guys to block me out and run the dive. My responsibility was the quarterback but he didn't really keep it that much. When I started going after the dive he kept it more. We all played great defense today so it was a fun game."

Schweiger finished the game with 3 assisted tackles.

On the recruiting front he lists USC and Okalahoma as his top schools. "But I like Miami too," he said. "I'm going to take a couple more visits after the season and probably make my decision at the U.S. Army All-Star game."

When GBW first reported that Schweiger had narrowed his list to five back in June. Michigan was on that list. Schweiger took a visit to Ann Arbor for the Central Michigan game and though he claimed the trip was "Awesome", he had some concerns about the way the Wolverines play defense. It seems as though those concerns haven't been overcome as his top three is solid. "I just like the way they play attacking defense and the way they use their defensive line," he said. "I didn't really like the way Michigan used their ends."

Valley Christain plays Bellermine next Friday at San Jose City College.
