Chicago DT Marquis Walton

Hubbard High School (Chicago) DT Marquis Walton was in Ann Arbor this past weekend on an unofficial visit. He spoke to GBW Tuesday evening and let us know how the trip went, and whether there is an official visit on the horizon.

Marquis Walton (6-3, 280 lbs., 4.9 in the 40, 365 lb. bench press, 30 inch vertical jump, 2.5 GPA/25 ACT) made the trek to Ann Arbor with his father and teammate Nate Lyles. "Man, that was a great game," Walton said. "Nobody expected Michigan to blow out Notre Dame like that. The defense was good. I like the way the tackles slant towards the play. I could fit in there."

Walton seemed impressed with the new Michigan Stadium field, telling me, "I've never played on turf like that, it was pretty cool."

The visit was unofficial and he did get a chance to talk with the staff: "I talked to Coach Carr after the game," Walton said. "He told me they were interested and to keep doing what I'm doing, and to stay strong."

As far as an offer? "No, I don't have an offer from Michigan."

The talented defensive tackle is receiving notice from some top schools, including some from the home state. "I have offers from Illinois and Northwestern, as well as Oregon and Cincinnati," Walton said. "Michigan and Oklahoma are my top two schools. I don't have an offer from Oklahoma either."

Which schools will Walton visit? "I want to visit Michigan, Oklahoma, Illinois, and Iowa," he said. "I think I have an official visit set up at Michigan for the last weekend in November, after the Ohio State game, but I'm not sure (as far as the exact date)." (Note: That is the Thanksgiving weekend)

Walton came up just for the game and was able to chat with some of the Michigan players. Primarily one from his hometown: "I talked to the guy from Chicago Carver, #8 (Jason Avant). He was pretty down to earth and told me Michigan was a great place," Walton said. "I didn't get to talk to any of the other recruits there though."

Walton said he plans to make his decision at after his season, "I want to take all of my visits before I decide."

Hubbard hosts rival Dunbar this Friday.
