Interview With Ill. DE Xavier Fulton

I got a call this afternoon from defensive tackle Xavier Fulton from Homewood, Ill., Homewood-Flossmoor.

The deep radio-announcer-quality voice on the phone was Xavier Fulton (6-5, 250 lbs.) from Homewood, Ill., Homewood-Flossmoor. I started out by asking if football practice has already started for him.

"We're on break right now. I was at school running and lifting, trying to gain some weight back. August 12th is the start of our summer camp."

What are your stats right now?

"I measured 6-5, 252 lbs. at Mighigan Sate Friday. I run a 4.8 second 40, and bench press 350 lbs."

Talk a little about Saturday's Michigan Open House.

"It was pretty cool. First there was a big meeting; Coach Carr came in and talked, and they showed us a video. Then we toured the football facilities -- the weight room, the indoor practice field. Then we ate lunch. Afterward we toured the campus. I got to see the Business School and the school of Literature, Arts and Science. We ended the day by going to the stadium. The new turf is beautiful; they were working on still filling in low spots as the rubberized soil settles."

"We met with Coach Carr. He said is was very interested in me, and that they would seriously recruit me. Michigan's defensive line coach Sheridan told me that as well. Coach Sheridan said they were watching my film that very day."

Had Michigan been recruiting you before?

"I met Coach Moeller when he came to my school in May. But I don't think he called me in May."

Who has offered you now?

"I have written offers from UI (Illinois), IU (Indiana), MSU ... Wisconsin said an offer was coming but it never actually came in the mail; so I think I'll get one from them."

Do you have a top five?

"After seeing Michigan State and Michigan last weekend, I honestly cannot even rank things right now."

What is your recruiting timetable?

"I want to take my official visits, but I don't think my family can schedule weekends for all five. So I'll try to take a couple selective visits during the season."

Talk about your on-the-field play a little.

I will play both ways this season since we are short of offensive linemen. I play defensive tackle on defense. Last season I made 49 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and five sacks. I also wrestled as a freshman, and plan to pick wrestling up again this year."
