Michigan’s fifth-year senior linebacker was named to two 2014 preseason awards lists on Monday. He was named on the watch list to the Butkus award, awarded annually to the top college linebacker. He was also named to the watch list for the Rotary Lombardi award, that is given annually to the top linebacker or down lineman.
Ryan, who was named captain last season as a redshirt junior, finished with 30 tackles, 4.5 sacks in eight games last season for the Wolverines. He came back last season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in spring practice.
This spring, Ryan has made the switch from outside linebacker to middle linebacker. The move, according to defensive coordinator, is to get the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder more in the middle of the action.
This is now four awards Ryan has been named to this summer, he was named to Chuck Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy last week.
Ryan will seek to become the second Wolverine to win the Butkus award since Erick Anderson won the award in 1991.
