Wheatley Jr. Down to Five

2015 Buffalo (N.Y.) Canisius TE/DE Tyrone Wheatley Jr. has whittled his list of suitors to an impressive quintet and now has his sights set on visits. One pressing question in the interim is whether Michigan will be hindered by the recent commitment of Scout.com's top rated tight end prospect.

Silence on the recruiting front has been the norm for Tyrone Wheatley Jr. A rigorous academic schedule, multiple athletic endeavors, and traditional teenage interests like hanging with friends have commanded most of his time.  That said, he had made a habit of connecting with prospective college coaches as often as possible until a recent decision to go totally dark.

“I kind of fell off the radar again lately,” said Wheatley.  “I was just really thinking about all of the schools so I could get my list down because guys have been committing left and right.  There have been like twenty-something dudes that committed in the last couple of weeks, so I was like, ‘I’ve got to get this thing going.’ So I decided to step back a little bit and really look at where I was right now.”

That led him to today’s revelation that only a handful of schools remain under consideration.

Alabama, USC, UCLA, Michigan, and Miami,” he reported. ”I’m going to take officials to all five of those schools."

Whether he will take unofficial visits to any of aforementioned campuses over the summer remains to be seen. He also hasn’t yet determined whether it will be tight end or defensive end at the next level.  The latter topic is particularly pertinent for his dad’s alma mater in the aftermath of Chris Clark’s commitment.  Many observers wonder if Clark’s presence in the Wolverines’ recruiting class will adversely affect their standing in Wheatley’s eyes.

“No,” he replied swiftly.  “I actually know Clark.  I’ve been talking to him for a while.  He actually contacted me a while back.  We’ve just been talking about the recruiting process and different schools. He had a lot of big schools as well.”

Clark has one school now.  Alex Malzone and a few other Michigan commits helped make sure of that. Now it appears they have a new target.

“Yeah, they’ve contacted me,” said Wheatley with a chuckle.
