Michigan offered 2016 U of D (Mich.) Jesuit five-star point guard Cassius Winston Sunday. Winston's father discusses the offer, what impresses them about Michigan, timeline, and more.

One of the top players in the state of Michigan is 2016 U of D (Mich.) Jesuit five-star point guard Cassius Winston.

Following several unofficial visits to Michigan including a strong performance at the Wolverines’ one-day college practice camp a week ago, John Beilein officially extended an offer to Winston Sunday afternoon.

“Coach Beilein called about an hour ago and we’re on the road back from the Nike Top 100 camp,” Winston’s father said. “He just called to talk to Cassius and tell him how he was excited to offer him a scholarship and things like that.”

Winston’s father adding, “We really haven’t gotten into specifics about how he’d fit into what they do.

“We basically talked about the pick and roll and how the guards make decisions in the offense and basically just told Cassius that he has all the characteristics of a kid that could be a Michigan player. He was excited about that.”

Already holding an offer from Michigan State as well, Winston’s father says they’re in no hurry to make a decision but understand what Michigan provides on and off the court.

“It’s still early,” Winston’s father said. “The reason why we do have the conversation is because we are impressed with them first of all because of what they offer academically to the student-athletes, they’re setup to have success and we’re excited about that.

“But also other schools offer things and that’s why we’re not in a rush to make a decision. We’re just taking it all in and we’re blessed.”

Asked if there’s a plan in place when it comes to narrowing down their list of schools, Winston’s father left the answer open ended.

“Right now we’re really just focused on a big July month coming up, getting there and doing that EYBL and some more exposure just to see where that takes us,” he said. “That’s been the format that we’ve just being doing this thing one day at a time and seeing what schools are interested and going from there.

“We don’t have a definite time table and not in a rush but we’ll compile a list and start researching and start taking people off the list when we get to that step.”

Either way, witnessing his son earn opportunities at the next level on Father’s Day is a perfect present for Winston.

“Any father seeing their kid have success and then us being such big sports fans, having success in the sport they choose to play, it doesn’t get any better than that,” he said. “We’re just taking it all in.”
