Wide Receiver

Scout Rating: ***

Scout Rank: #58 WR

Vitals: 6’4 / 190

Hometown: Detroit (Mich.) Country Day

His Recruiting Story:

Ways picked up football late, but learned quickly. After playing junior varsity as a sophomore, he put together a big varsity debut as a junior. He helped Country Day to the state title game and earned his first offer from Toledo. As schools found out about him more through the Winter, offers would be added from Rutgers and Iowa. He visited Michigan several times before the Wolverines offered in April. He took a week to think about it before making it official that he would don the maize and blue. He would then camp at Michigan that summer and turn in another big season as a senior.

SCOUTING REPORT

He is a big, physical kid who I thought got more comfortable and confident as his career went on. He was good as a junior, but really good as a senior. He improved in every facet of the game. He’s tough to press because he’s so strong and he not only got stronger, but played more aggressively, I thought, as a senior. He can go up and get the ball and was surprisingly good after the catch. Relatively new to the game still, I think he just has to refine everything from his routes to his consistency, but his best football is still ahead. – Scout.com national analyst Allen Trieu

WHY MICHIGAN?

“When my family and I met with Coach Hoke, he was just a genuine, nice man; just a nice guy who really cares about his kids outside of football. When we first talked, you asked me what I was looking for in a college and that’s what I was looking for was a coach and a college that cares about me, not just as a football player, but as a young man.” – Maurice Ways

BOTTOM LINE

Michigan has three receivers coming in this year and Ways is the biggest and most physical of the bunch. He has similarities to former Wolverine Adrian Arrington, and although he isn’t as polished coming out of high school, we think he can eventually make a similar impact. The work he put in and the strides he made between his junior and senior seasons speak to that.
