His Recruiting Story:
After a good sophomore season, Ferns picked up his first offers from Marshall and Virginia to start the process. That put the wheels in motion and soon, Notre Dame, Michigan State and others quickly joined. In time, Ohio State and Michigan would also extend offers. He visited Michigan in June and again in August for the BBQ at the Big House. After going home and thinking about his decision, he committed to Michigan just before his junior season. As a junior, he lead his team to the state title game. He would add an Alabama offer that spring, but never considered the Tide and remained committed to the Wolverines.
Ferns has good size and is built ready for the college game. As a track kid, he has the straight line speed to run down ball carriers and is great when he’s coming forward. He still has to work on his coverage skills, but he’s a great blitzer and run defender. He offers different possibilities because he could play middle backer, SAM or potentially even on the edge as an end at times. – Scout.com national analyst Allen Trieu
“I think when I went back (to Ann Arbor) the second time for the BBQ, I felt good about making the decision. After that you just kind of look out for the academic stuff focusing on fixing my junior schedule up to graduate early my senior year. After that, I was ready to go. Michigan just stuck out to me. After that second visit up there it kind of really stuck out more. I felt good the whole time I was there. I felt great and I knew it was time to make the decision.”
Ferns has the physical tools you look for in a linebacker and he is a very smart kid. He may have an adjustment period as he did not see a ton of fellow D1 recruits in high school, but with the depth Michigan has at linebacker, he likely will not be pressed into action as a true freshman unless it is on special teams. That said, his size and speed make him a strong bet to be a major contributor in year two.
