Elkton (Md.) Eastern Christian Academy WR Freddy Canteen remained under the radar until late in his junior year before shining at Michigan's camp in 2013. Canteen brings precise route running, strong hands and great quickness off the line to the Wolverines for 2014.

Freddy Canteen

His Recruiting Story:
Canteen first began catching the eye of scouts during 7-on-7 season heading into his junior season earning him three quick offers from Rutgers, Maryland and Hawaii. Picking up offers from both Connecticut and Temple that fall, Canteen unofficially visited both Rutgers and West Virginia for games, gaining familiarity with a couple of his early favorites. 2013 was the year Canteen really broke onto the scene with a strong showing in the spring at the New Level Athletics 7-on-7. One of the top performers showcasing great quickness in and out of his breaks and strong hands, Canteen jumped onto the radar of major schools. For Michigan, their courtship of Canteen didn’t begin until summer camp that June when Canteen and several of his teammates made their way to Ann Arbor to compete. Impressing early and often with his ability, Canteen walked out of the camp with a Michigan offer. A little over a week later, Canteen ended his recruiting process by pledging for the Wolverines.

SCOUTING REPORT Northeast Recruiting Analyst Brian Dohn on Freddy Canteen: “After watching Canteen during the 7-on-7 circuit, the feeling was he could be an elite player but he had to show it in pads. Well, he did. Canteen is versatile and exciting. He has elusiveness in his ability after the catch, and he is an exceptional route runner who did not disappoint. He is good on film, but it doesn’t do justice to the speed he plays at when watching him live.”

For Canteen, committing to Michigan so soon after picking up the scholarship offer from the Wolverines was simple.

“(Friday night) I was thinking about everything and I just came to the conclusion that Michigan is the best place for me.  Academically they’re top notch and football wise they’re a powerhouse.”

“I’m just blessed, ready to work, and thankful for the opportunity.”

After talking it over with his family and his coach, Canteen didn’t feel there was much of a choice to be made.

“You can’t say no to Michigan,” he said. “Michigan offers everything you want in a school as well as their football program. Couldn’t say no.”

Canteen’s explosiveness and precise route running are his greatest assets. Enrolling early at Michigan will be of great benefit to a young man in need of added muscle if he hopes to see the field as a true freshman. Not as highly rated as some other wide receiver targets in the 2014 class, Canteen doesn’t care, proclaiming himself as a self-motivated individual eager to prove himself. For Michigan, Canteen could find a role in the slot or flank out wide depending on formation. Either way, with strong hands and quick bursts off the line, Canteen will be a handful for defenders especially in press coverage.
