ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After scoring just nine points on 2-of-8 shooting, Glenn Robinson III played arguably his worse game of the Big Ten this season in Michigan’s 80-75 win at Michigan State.
Despite his sub-par shooting performance, Michigan coach John Beilein has a clear message for his sophomore standout.
“He’s had really good shots. I watch them go in,” Beilein said. “He does a lot of shooting on his own. The next (shot) he makes -- he may never miss again. He’s just going to keep on shooting it when he’s open. He’s a really good shooter.”
Robinson III was held to single digit scoring for the second time in conference play this season, he scored six points at Minnesota. On the season, he averages 13.6 points, which is second on the team. And after a poor shooting night, he says he has “no doubt” the shots will fall again.
“Of course, the shots aren’t falling,” Robinson III said. “There is no doubt in mind that those shots are going to fall just like they were a couple games ago, earlier in the season.”
Robinson III shooting struggles are just normal growing pains that every scorer goes through in a season says Belien.
“Same thing with all of our good shooters. They will go through sometimes when the ball just doesn’t fall,” Beilein said. “He’s so unselfish, he doesn’t have that type of volume. But at the same time, is he’s open, he’s going to come out if he doesn’t shoot that ball.”
Robinson, who also averages 4.4 rebounds, says he can help the team in other ways if his shots aren’t falling.
“Coach has drawn up more stuff for me to attack form the post inside a little bit more,” Robinson III said. “When my shot doesn’t fall, I try to go inside and get some rebounds. Do some extra things to help the team out.”
Robinson III is native of St. John, Ind., and was recruited by Purdue, where his father Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson starred from 1992-94. He admits, he “loves” playing against his home state schools.
“I think that’s something that is going to continue being from Indiana. My dad played there. There was a lot of talk about maybe I should’ve went there. There is no doubt in my mind I’m in the right place,” Robinson III said. “But I love playing against Purdue, IU, those Indiana games.
“It will be another great game – And I love playing in those.”
