Michigan sophomore Spike Albrecht made his first career start in the Wolverines win over No. 10 Iowa Wednesday night, playing efficient and steady in place of freshman Derrick Walton.

ANN ARBOR—For much of Michigan’s season, sophomore Spike Albrecht has been the steady handed floor general off the bench for the Wolverines.

On Wednesday, playing host to the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes, that steady hand got the start at point guard in place of freshman Derrick Walton who was dealing with flu like symptoms throughout the week.

Albrecht’s first career start as a Michigan Wolverine went about as well as planned, securing yet another conference win and turning the ball over a grand total of zero times in 35 minutes.

“He handle it pretty good?” Michigan coach John Beilein asked sarcastically following the win. “Yeah, seven assists, zero turnovers.”

Albrecht added seven points and four steals, one of which came directly following a dunk by Glenn Robinson III to give Michigan an 11-point lead midway through the second half.

Walton, after starting the first 17 games of the year at point guard, played just three minutes scoring no points with one assist and one turnover.

“We got the call yesterday morning that Derrick had a temperature and flu like symptoms so, obviously he got to see the doctor and just kept him away from everybody all day,” Beilein said. “So, he didn’t even go to practice, see the game plan.

“The fever broke, he felt good today, enough to at least give us a minute or two. But Spike was fine, so, I’m really pleased the way he played.”

Beilein later added Albrecht knew Tuesday that he would be getting the nod in place of the ailing Walton, yet another example of the next man up mentality the Michigan program continues to employ during their 6-0 start to Big Ten play.

“I was fine,” Albrecht said afterward. “I have a lot of confidence and my teammates have confidence in me. I was just trying to go out there and do what I always do.

“I didn’t treat it any different because I was starting, I was just trying to play my hardest and hopefully get the win.”
