Michigan coach John Beilein updated the status of sophomore Mitch McGary who is now doing separate activities in preparation for his return. Beilein also touches on Derrick Walton Jr.'s development as the Wolverines play host to South Carolina State Tuesday night at Crisler Center.

ANN ARBOR—Mitch McGary is back -- kind of.

Michigan coach John Beilein did announce Monday afternoon that the sophomore and preseason First Team All-America selection is now participating in controlled workouts in preparation for his return from a back issue for the 2013-14 Wolverines.

“For the first time now he’s done some workouts,” Beilein said. “He’s has more repetitions in practice over the last 10 days.

“He’s had repetitions, he looks very good, and we’re going to continue increasing his repetitions.”

McGary has already missed both of Michigan’s exhibition games and the season opener Friday against UMass Lowell.

It’s still unclear when McGary will return to the floor in game action, Beilein adding he has not participated in any contact drills, half court or otherwise just yet.

“Don’t have a date,” Beilein said. “I think the date will be when we really feel he’s as close to being in shape to really get in there and play.”

Michigan now prepares to host South Carolina State Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Freshman point guard Derrick Walton Jr. is gearing up for the second start of his young career after recording six-points, four assists, three steals, and just one turnover in Michigan’s 69-42 win over UMass Lowell.

With a road atmosphere at Iowa State coming up this weekend and the Puerto Rico Classic next week, getting Walton as familiar as possible remains a priority for Beilein and the Wolverines.

“He picks up things very quickly,” Beilein said. “His quickness in small spaces right now is really excellent, the way he’s picked the ball away from a couple of people. That ability to be one of our best guys with steals.

“He did a good job, now we just got to continue to give him more minutes, get him to understand different defenses, how they’re attacking because every night will be a different scheme against us. For him to absorb all that does take time.”
